LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – On day two of the Grizzly Open, the Lindsey Wilson softball team fell in back-to-back contests with fourth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett and Taylor (Ind.).
Elizabeth Funk recorded another three-hit day to lead the Blue Raider offense, followed by two hits apiece from
Natalie Wandrie and
Melaina Tucker.
Game One | Lindsey Wilson 2, No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett 3
The Blue Raiders fared better against the hosts on Saturday afternoon, pushing them to the brink before ultimately coming up short.
Georgia Gwinnett scattered its two runs over the first and fourth innings, while the Grizzlies' defense did its part to not allow a Lindsey Wilson hit until the fifth frame.
In the fifth, Funk led off with a single through the left side but was punched out the next at-bat on a fielder's choice. Still, the Blue Raiders managed to load the bases with Wandrie single and a walk to
Brylee Pickerell.
Madyson Jones eventually got her side on the board, grounding a ball through the right part of the infield to plate
Kayley Bruener and cut the deficit in half.
The next inning, the Blue Raiders put a pair of runners in scoring position and tied the game on a wild pitch.
The Grizzlies went on to steal a 3-2 decision in the bottom half of the seventh.
Kayden Murray started in the circle, firing 4.2 innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs.
Grace Adams closed out the game in relief and surrendered one run on one hit.
Game Two | Lindsey Wilson 0, Taylor 6
In the second game of the day, the Trojans exacted revenge on the Blue Raiders and put up six runs on 11 hits.
After tacking on a run in both the first and second innings, Taylor posted a three-piece in the third and Lindsey Wilson could not recover.
The Blue Raiders had a chance to score in the top half of the second with back-to-back base hits from Funk and Wandrie, then again in the fourth when the latter of the two reached third base on a stolen base and an error. Each time, however, the Trojan defense responded and kept Lindsey Wilson empty.
Three different pitchers saw action for the Blue Raiders in game two, including freshmen
K'Asia Palmer and Bruener, who tallied two strikeouts.
Lindsey Wilson makes its home debut at 1 p.m. CST on Saturday, February 17 in a doubleheader against Union (Ky.)
