Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College softball team committed three costly errors today and lost to Campbellsville (Ky.) University 4-3 in the Mid-South Conference Tournament title game at Veterans Memorial Park.
Campbellsville (39-12-1) scored three unearned runs to win their second straight tournament title and earn the automatic bid into next week's NAIA Region XI Tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
Lindsey Wilson (31-18) scored the game's first two runs in the first inning.
Sophomore designated player
Whitney Mink and junior left fielder
Kelley Wilson led off the game with bunt singles. After junior third baseman Shayla Cain sacrificed the pair into scoring position, senior catcher
Ginny Long converted the squeeze play into a pair of runs -- the first on the bunt and the second on an error by Campbellsville catcher Michelle Baker -- to give the Blue Raiders the 2-0 lead.
Campbellsville cut the Lindsey Wilson lead in half in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Tigers scored off the first Blue Raider error.
Campbellsville shortstop Lauren Wathen attempted to score on center fielder Amber Shrum's fielder's choice but was chased back to third base after Lindsey Wilson shortstop
Brittany Dorsey's throw to the plate.
Long's low throw to third base scooted by Cain into left field and allowed Wathen to score and second baseman Jessica Gunby -- who reached after being hit by the pitch -- and Shrum into scoring position.
Lindsey Wilson junior starting pitcher
Leigh Ann Moore struck out the next two Campbellsville batters to end the Lady Tiger threat.
The game remained tied until the third inning when Lindsey Wilson's Mink -- who reached base after being hit by the pitch -- scored on Cain's single.
Once again, Campbellsville chipped away at the lead scoring in the bottom of the third inning.
Campbellsville's Baker -- after reaching on an error -- scored when Moore walked Lady Tiger left fielder Dana Price with bases loaded.
Moore -- who suffered the loss -- allowed three unearned runs on six Campbellsville hits in four innings of work. She struck out three Lady Tiger hitters.
Campbellsville tied the game in the fourth inning off Lindsey Wilson senior reliever
Danielle Clark. Lady Tiger first baseman Krystle Johnson singled home right fielder Allison Horton to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Lady Tigers would score the game winner in the sixth inning off the third Lindsey Wilson error.
Horton singled off Moore -- who re-entered to start the inning -- and advanced to second on Shrum's ground out. Baker slapped the ball up the middle between Moore's legs and off second baseman
Jennifer Gross' glove into centerfield to score Horton and give Campbellsville the 4-3 lead.
Lindsey Wilson's final at-bat ended quietly as Campbellsville starter Kelly Vooris struck out a pair of Blue Raiders and forced the other into a ground out.
Vooris earned the win allowing three runs -- two earned -- on six hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out seven Lindsey Wilson hitters.
Lindsey Wilson joins Campbellsville in the region tournament next week after finishing runner-up in the MSC Tournament. The regional bracket will be announced early next week.
