Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College softball team extended its winning streak to nine games on Monday after shutting out Taylor (Ind.) University 8-0 in game one and winning game two 3-1 in the eighth inning on a walk-off home run by catcher Allie Goniea at Lindsey Wilson Park.
Allowing just one run in two games, the pitching was the dominant force for the Blue Raiders. Anyibell Ramirez - who earned the win in both games -- pitched all but one inning in the opener, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit in five innings. Emily Poynter entered in the sixth inning to close out the mercy-rules win with one strikeout.
Morgan Paschall pitched every inning of regulation in game two with 13 strikeouts and just one earned run on nine hits. Ramirez closed out the game's last inning to pick up the win with a pair of strikeouts.
The Blue Raiders (23-8) bats were cooled down in game two as no player recorded more than one hit in the game. The offense was better in the opener as Ramirez went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, while shortstop Jordan Gilland went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Goniea finished the day 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBI and two runs, but the most important hit came on the home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-1 win in game two.
Outfielder Megan Huckaby started the inning on second base per international tie-breaker rules, but was unable to advance to third on a pop out by Ramirez and ground out by first baseman Kelly McCarty. With two outs, however, Goniea stepped up to the plate and delivered a blast over the right-field fence on a 1-2 count to end the game.
Taylor (4-8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a double by centerfielder Laura Strode that drove in right fielder Emily Kramer who was waiting on first base. Lindsey Wilson struck back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Ramirez scored the tying run on a double by Paschall that set up Goniea's heroics in the eighth.
The Blue Raiders cruised in game one, scoring in all but two innings of the shortened game. Lindsey Wilson tallied 10 hits in all, while Taylor managed just three and committed six errors in the field.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 30 at the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).
