Softball Falls Just Short of Gulf Shores Invitational Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Lindsey Wilson College softball team won all but one game during the Gulf Shores Invitational -- the last game played.

The Blue Raiders successful run through the three-day event included wins over three nationally ranked teams en route to a runner-up finish in the Gold Bracket -- the top of three tournament brackets following the 28-team pool play.

Lindsey Wilson won a pair of tournament games today to reach the finals where the Blue Raiders faced Brenau (Ga.) University -- the only team to hand LWC a loss this season. It took 10 innings, but in the end the No. 18-ranked Golden Tigers (16-2) bested Lindsey Wilson for the second time this season with a 5-4 win.

In the championship game, Brenau scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th to squeak past the Blue Raiders 5-4 for the championship. Lindsey Wilson emerged from the tournament with a 6-1 record over the three days and an 18-2 overall mark.

The Golden Tigers opened the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Lindsey Wilson responded one inning later as sophomore Lauren Seibert belted a game-tying home run in the fifth inning to knot the game a 1-1.

The game remained tied until Brenau plated three runs in the first extra inning. Beginning in the eighth inning the game used the international tiebreaker, placing a runner on second base to open the inning.

Once again the resilient Blue Raiders responded matching the Golden Tigers with three runs in the bottom half of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4.

Brenau scored the decisive run in the top of the 10th on a Lindsey Wilson error to give the Golden Tigers the 5-4 lead and ultimately the win. In the bottom of the 10th, freshman Wendy Vincent started on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jordan Gilland. But that's as far as Vincent would get as Brenau pitcher Anna Maness struck out sophomore Alexis Rodgers and forced junior Amy Harner into a fly out to centerfield to end the game.

Lindsey Wilson senior pitcher Anyibell Ramirez suffered the loss allowing four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over seven innings of relief work. She fanned 10 Brenau batters. Maness picked up the win while allowing four runs -- two earned -- on three Lindsey Wilson hits in a 10-inning, complete game effort.

The loss ended Lindsey Wilson's 12-game winning streak -- three shy of the program's record.

In the semifinals, Lindsey Wilson needed extra innings to extend its winning streak and advance to the Gulf Shores Invitational final with a 1-0 win over Columbia (Mo.) College (7-4) in eight innings.

Junior Megan Huckaby scored the game's only run -- after opening the inning at second base due to the international tiebreaker. Junior Emily Priar led off the bottom of the eighth with a single that moved Huckby to third base. Two batters later Siebert's sacrifice fly to centerfield plated Huckby to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 win.

Ramirez picked up the eight-inning complete-game shutout allowing just one hit while striking out 10 Columbia batters.

In today's quarterfinal game, Ramirez and senior hurlers Morgan Paschall combined to no-hit No. 23-ranked Auburn University Montgomery in a 4-0 win.

The Blue Raiders scored a run in each of the first four innings and Lindsey Wilson's dynamic pitching duo did the rest.

Just two AUM (20-2) batters reached based during the game -- both via the walk -- as Ramirez and Paschall faced just 23 batters in the game. Ramirez finished with 12 strikeouts -- including 11 straight to open the game -- in her four innings of work while Paschall struck out two and forced the Senators into six ground-outs.

Rodgers led the Blue Raider offense with two hits while junior Jamie Williams supplied a RBI double in the first inning that proved to be the game-winning hit.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 15, as the Blue Raiders travel to Spring Hill (Ala.) College for a doubleheader.
