Softball Wins Three Straight to Reach MSC Tournament Finals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

DANVILLE, Ky. -- No one said reaching the championship game of the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament would be easy after losing a game on Friday, but Lindsey Wilson College made it look that way, outscoring its three opponents 18-0 on Saturday to reach Sunday's finals at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.

The Blue Raiders are scheduled to face Campbellsville (Ky.) University at 10 a.m. CT in the championship game. The Tigers enter the finals undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, forcing the Blue Raiders to beat them twice to win the championship.

If necessary, Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville would play the elimination game at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Lindsey Wilson opened Saturday morning with a 9-0 run-rule win in five innings against Georgetown (Ky.) College, followed by a 5-0 decision against University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in a rematch of Friday's opening loss and then advanced to the finals with a 4-0 win against the University of Rio Grande (Ohio).

Through three games, none of the Blue Raiders' opponents could score a run as senior pitcher Anyibell Ramirez finished 2-0 on the day with 10 innings pitched, throwing a complete game against Georgetown and the first five innings against Rio Grande.

Ramirez struck out 19 batters, allowing just four hits and walking three batters in both games combined.

Senior Morgan Paschall pitched seven innings against Cumberlands to earn the win, followed by the final two innings against Rio Grande. Paschall struck out 11 batters in nine innings with two hits and two walks allowed.

Junior shortstop Jamie Williams led Lindsey Wilson at the plate with a pair of home runs - both against Georgetown - and four hits on the day with four RBIs, two doubles, two walks and a stolen base.

Junior third baseman Emily Priar opened the day with a 3-for-3 showing against Georgetown to end up with a combined six hits, three RBIs, a triple, two doubles and a stolen base. Junior designated player Megan Huckaby reached on a pair of hits, including an RBI double to score the first run against Rio Grande after three innings of scoreless play.

Senior catcher Ally Goniea also hit a home run against Georgetown and finished with three RBIs and a double, while sophomore left fielder Alexis Rodgers got a hit in all three games including a combined three stolen bases and two runs scored against Rio Grande.

Losing pitchers on the day were Michelle Dresselhaus for Georgetown, Carrie Cobb for Cumberlands and Rio Grande's Allison Mills.

After a slow day of offense on Friday, the Blue Raiders wasted little time getting things going against Georgetown, tallying six runs through the first two innings.

Lindsey Wilson led 2-0 after the first inning when junior center fielder Amy Harner walked before coming all the way home on Goniea's double. Priar followed that play with a double of her own to score Goniea.

With sophomore right fielder Lauren Seibert on third base after an error and Harner reaching first base on another walk and stealing second, Goniea hit a single to score them both in the second inning. Then with Goniea on second, Williams belted her first home run of the game to help put Lindsey Wilson up 6-0 and take control of the game.

The Blue Raiders added four more runs in the fourth inning before a strikeout and two fly outs brought the Tigers season to an end with Lindsey Wilson leading by nine runs after five innings.

Runs were fewer and more spread out against Cumberlands, but the Blue Raiders still left the game with the win. Lindsey Wilson scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth, before a one-run sixth brought all scoring in the game to a close.

Paschall never gave the Patriots a chance as they managed just two hits against her in the complete-game performance.

It was obvious that the day's final game between Lindsey Wilson and Rio Grande featured two tired teams simply looking for one of them to score first.

Luckily for the Blue Raiders they brought life into the game in the fourth inning after Huckaby helped break a scoreless tie with her RBI double that scored junior first baseman Kaylee Garrett.

Garrett had singled to lead off the innings, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then reached third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Jordan Gilland.

Not settling for just one run, the rally continued as Rodgers singled to advance Huckaby to third and promptly stole second base, allowing Harner's single to center field to score both Huckaby and Rodgers.

The duo manufactured the game's only other run in the sixth inning as Rodgers singled on a hit to left field, advanced to second on the throw and stole third base to score on another single by Harner.

Last season Lindsey Wilson won its first MSC Tournament Championship with a win against Campbellsville at Lindsey Wilson Park after play at Danville was rained out. The Tigers won the first game against the Blue Raiders to give each team a loss before Lindsey Wilson won the elimination game.
