Softball Ends Successful 2011 Campaign with 3-1 Loss to Belhaven

Box Score

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- A season with far more highs than lows came to a crushing end for the Lindsey Wilson College softball team at the NAIA National Championship with a 3-1 loss against Belhaven (Miss.) University in the final game of pool play at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Finishing 2-1 in pool play for the second straight season, the Blue Raiders are eliminated from the championship hunt as the Blazers advance to the double-elimination tournament that starts Monday with a 3-0 run through pool play.

The Blue Raiders finish the 2011 season with a 47-8 overall record, as the 47 wins match a program record set by last year's team. Belhaven is 47-10 overall with the win in the elimination game.

In a game where Lindsey Wilson outhit its opponent 6-4, the extra base runners didn't equal runs on the scoreboard as a number of Blue Raiders were left stranded in the paths.

Lindsey Wilson failed to score in the game all the way until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior catcher Ally Goniea sent a deep home run to center field.

The home run would be the only scoring done by the Blue Raiders, while Belhaven was able to put a single run on the board in the first, third and seventh innings.

Senior Anyibell Ramirez made the start in the circle for Lindsey Wilson, picking up the loss to fall to 29-8 on the year with two runs allowed on three hits in 2-1/3 innings. Senior Morgan Paschall pitched the rest of the game, allowing just one hit, which was a home run in the seventh inning by Rachel Wright to make the score 3-1.

Lindsey Wilson had a chance to rally in the final inning after junior designated player Mikaila Etheredge hit a line drive single to center field and Megan Huckaby reached first base on an error to put two batters on with just one out.

Senior pinch hitter Kelly McCarty hit a fielder's choice for a put out at third base in the next at bat and junior center fielder Amy Harner failed to produce any runs in the final at bat to bring the season to a close.

Goniea finished the game leading the Blue Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored with her home run.

Sarah Burns picked up the win for Belhaven, pitching a complete game with six hits allowed and eight strikeouts.
