PULASKI, Tenn. -- After beating Point (Ga.) University 10-1 in five innings and shutting out Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 3-0, the 14th ranked Lindsey Wilson College softball team could rest easy, knowing the 2012 season was off to a solid start at the Martin Methodist Meltdown on Friday afternoon.

Playing two games back-to-back at the event hosted by Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College, the Blue Raiders had big performances from veterans and newcomers alike.

Freshmen Andrea Whelan and Jordan Hood both hit home runs in their first collegiate games against Point, with Whelan's being a grand slam.

Junior pitcher Cara Law was impressive earning the win against Freed-Hardeman, pitching a complete game with two strikeouts and scattering just three hits.

Hood finished 2-for-3 against Point with an RBI and run scored, Whelan was 1-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs and second baseman Jane Egiazarova also tallied two hits with a run scored.

Hood earned the win in the circle, going three innings with five strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Unfortunately, one of the hits was a Point home run by first baseman Felicia Lingerfelt. The long ball was its only scoring threat of the day.

Lauren Seibert replaced Hood in the final two innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.

Brittany Linton picked up the loss, pitching all five innings and scattering eight hits for eight earned runs and striking out four.

After a scoreless first inning, Lindsey Wilson went on the attack in the top of the second as Hood led off with her home run. Later first baseman Amy Buwalda hit a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner Travatia Bowden and third baseman Emily Priar knocked a hit that Point couldn't field cleanly as Whelan and Egiazarova were able to cross the plate.

In all, the Blue Raiders had put four runs on the scoreboard as Point answered with its own home run, but was looking at a 4-1 deficit heading into the fourth inning.

In that frame Lindsey Wilson continued to pour it on, scoring six more runs to force the shortened run-rule game.

Egiazarova singled, Priar doubled, shortstop Jamie Williams reached on a walk, Josie Cox was hit by a pitch, catcher Mikaila Etheredge walked and finally Whelan crushed the grand slam all in the fourth inning.

The runs were fewer against Freed-Hardeman, but Priar, Whelan and second baseman Jordan Gilland were able to keep their bats hot in the win.

Priar finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Whelan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run and Gilland matched her with two hits and an RBI.

Freed-Hardeman managed to tally just three hits in the game, coming from first baseman Brittany Yates, designated player Amber Vansandt and left fielder Kamara Trice.

Tiffany Tucker was the losing pitcher, throwing a complete game against the Blue Raiders with eight hits and three walks issued. Tucker struck out just two batters in six innings.

Lindsey Wilson failed to score more than one run in any inning, adding scores in the second, third and fifth frames to secure the win.

Whelan led off the second inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cox. Gilland followed that sacrifice with a single and Whelan trekked all the way home for the score.

In the third inning, it was Whelan returning the favor with an RBI for Lindsey Wilson.

Priar singled with one out and Williams laid down a bunt to move her to second. With Priar in scoring position, Whelan ripped a single to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 advantage.

The last run of the game happened in a hurry as Priar led off with a single and Williams followed with a double to score Priar and give the Blue Raiders their final 3-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action at the meltdown on Saturday, taking on Point again at 8 a.m CT, followed by a rematch with Freed-Hardeman at Noon.
