Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. -- It wasn't always pretty, but the No. 14 Lindsey Wilson College softball team held Cumberlands (Ky.) scoreless in two games to open Mid-South Conference play on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.
The Blue Raiders cruised in game one for a 6-0 win, but found themselves relying on a strong pitching performance in game two for a 1-0 decision.
Lindsey Wilson (15-2, 2-0 MSC) had one good offensive showing in each game at least as Emily Priar connected on two hits with a home run and two RBIs in the opener and Megan Huckaby had two hits and scored a run in game two.
Luckily the Blue Raiders got two good complete-game pitching performances from game-one starter Jordan Hood and Cara Law.
Hood struck out nine batters in seven innings with just three hits and a walk, while Law fanned seven in seven innings and allowed just two hits and issued two walks.
It was quite the day for Patriots second baseman Jessica Speake as she accounted for all three hits in game one, then pitched a complete game in the nightcap, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Lindsey Wilson spread its run out in the opener, scoring one run in both the second and third innings before tallying two each in the fifth and sixth.
Cumberlands (0-10, 0-2 MSC) never threatened to answer with all of its hits being spreak out by Speake's at bats.
Priar hit her two-run homer in the fifth innings to lift the Blue Raider lead to 4-0. Right fielder Alexis Rodgers had led off the inning with a single.
Pinch runner Ashley Hughes scored the winning run in the second inning as she replaced catcher Josie Cox in the base paths after she was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Jordan Gilland advanced Hughes to second on a sacrifice bunt and first baseman Amy Buwalda drove her home on a double to deep, left center field.
The lone run in game two came in the bottom of the third inning.
Huckaby led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Patriots' left fielder.
Priar reached base on an error in the next at bat, allowing Huckaby to move to third. From there shortstop Jamie Williams was walked to load the bases, allowing right fielder Andrea Whelan to score Huckaby on a fielder's choice.
Cumberlands struggled to respond as it went through two straight 1-2-3 innings, followed by an inning with just a single in the sixth.
The Patriots best chance to tie came in the final inning as first baseman Ashley Wampley was walked to lead things off and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Designated player Rachel Akins also reached on a walk to put a runner on first and second, but Speake ended things hitting into a 1-5-3 double play.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 6 for an MSC doubleheader against St. Catharine (Ky.) at Blue Raider Stadium.
