No. 15 Softball Loses to No. 8 Auburn-Montgomery 1-0 on Home Run

Box Score

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Jyssica Pepper led off the fourth inning with a home run to center field that was all No. 8 Auburn-Montgomery needed to top the 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team 1-0 on Sunday in the Orange Beach Invitational at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Pepper went 3 for 3 for the game and stole a base as the Warhawks (14-1) and Blue Raiders each finished with just five hits. Pitcher Kristina Krupinski led the Lindsey Wilson (14-2) offense with two hits, while outfielder Antoinette Jenkins added two stolen bases to one hit.

The loss comes in the first round of the invitational's gold bracket, bringing an end to the Blue Raiders' spring-break road trip. Lindsey Wilson qualified for the top bracket after finishing 3-1 in pool play on Friday and Saturday.

In the three days combined, Lindsey Wilson topped Belhaven (Miss.) 1-0, Columbia (Mo.) 9-1 and No. 10 Houston-Victoria (Texas) 4-2. The Blue Raiders' two losses came against Spring Hill (Ala.) 1-0 and AUM 1-0.

Before Pepper's homer, Krupinski (2-1) was pitching a gem for Lindsey Wilson. Before being replaced by Jordan Hood in the fifth inning she allowed just two hits with a strikeout and walk. Hood held AUM at one run for two innings allowing three hits and striking out five.

Cassie Daniels (6-0) pitched a complete game for the Warhawks, scattering five hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Neither team was without chances to add more runs as they both stranded five on base for the game. Lindsey Wilson had Krupinski on third in the second inning but struck out twice and outfielder Ali Hart stole third base in the fourth before another strikeout.

Another chance for the Blue Raiders arose in the seventh inning as Krupinski led off with a single and shortstop Lauren Payne bunted for a base hit to move pinch runner Ashley Hughes to second with one out. Once again, the bats never heated up as catcher Jane Egiazarova popped out and outfielder Travatia Bowden struck out to end the game.

Lindsey Wilson is back on the field at Noon CT on Wednesday at Asbury in Wilmore, Ky.
