No. 15 Softball Earns Long Split at UVa.-Wise on Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WISE, Va. – No. 15 Lindsey Wilson struggled to find hits in a 7-2 loss in game one, but outlasted UVa.-Wise 10-9 in a marathon 11-inning affair to earn a split on the road in Mid-South Conference softball action Friday night.

Antoinette Jenkins led the Blue Raiders with four hits and three runs with a stolen base in both games combined, while Ali Hart went 3 for 4 in the win with an RBI, double, stolen base and run scored.

Kristina Krupinski hit a home run in the 11th inning of game two to put Lindsey Wilson up 10-7 on one of her two hits on the day.

Cara Law (2-2) was stuck with the loss in the opener after giving up five runs on three hits in 1-2/3 innings of relief. Jordan Hood (4-0) snagged the win in extra innings as she allowed three runs, none earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Starter Cheyanne Knepper threw the first five innings, scattering 10 hits for six runs and seven strikeouts as well.

In game one, Lindsey Wilson (17-3, 3-1 MSC) struggled at the plate, finding just five hits in the game, compared to 10 for the Cavaliers. Catcher Jane Egiazarova had the only multiple hit game with two, including a triple in the fifth, but was stranded as the inning's only hit.

UVa.-Wise scored a run in both the second and third innings. The first score came after three singles, while the run in the third was a home run by first baseman Kristina Romualdo.

The Blue Raiders tied it up at two in the sixth on just one hit as Jenkins reached on an error and later scored on a throwing error by the Cavs. Right fielder Andrea Whelan reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on the previous error before shortstop Madison Scott brought her home with a sacrifice fly.

While UVa.-Wise let Lindsey Wilson back in it with mistakes on the field, it made up for it at the plate, scoring five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win. A hit batter and two walks to start the frame allowed three Cavalier singles to do most of the damage.

Lindsey Wilson led 4-1 in the second inning of game two, but the next five innings were a classic back-and-forth affair that saw the game tied up at six after the seventh.

Both the Blue Raiders and Cavaliers scored runs in the 10th to keep things even as Hood hit a sac fly that scored Egiazarova who started the inning on second with the international tie-breaker rule in effect. Wise answered the same exact way as Romualdo flied out to score center fielder Christina Ziemba waiting on third.

The drama continued in the 11th as Lindsey Wilson looked to be in control as pinch runner Taylor Proctor scored on a Jenkins single and Krupinski hit a two-run blast over the fence to put it up 10-7. The Cavs had other ideas as third baseman Megan Dillion led off with a home run to score her and the runner on second.

Up just one run with no outs, Hood came through for Lindsey Wilson, getting two fly outs and a groundout to end the contest before outfielder Mindy Combs could be driven home from third after moving over on a wild pitch.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday, hosting Cumberlands (Ky.) at Lindsey Wilson Park.
