Box Score 2 GULF SHORES, Ala. – Lindsey Wilson suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 1-0 decision to Spring Hill (Ala.), but bounced back with a 4-2 win over No. 10 Houston Victoria on Saturday at the Orange Beach Softball Invitational at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The Blue Raiders had a combined 13 hits through two games after finishing with just three against Spring Hill. Kristina Krupinski, Madison Scott, Travatia Bowden and Jane Egiazarova each found two hits for head coach Ashley McCool-Cozart as her team finished the day with a 13-1 overall record.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action at the invitational with Gold Bracket play on Sunday. The schedule for the winner's bracket will be released upon the completion of games on Saturday night.
Spring Hill 1, No. 15 Lindsey Wilson 0
After tallying two of its total three hits in the sixth inning, Spring Hill (14-3) got a run across the plate to hold off Lindsey Wilson for the 1-0 win. The Blue Raiders responded in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but second baseman Chelsea Collins struck out on a full count to end it.
Lindsey Wilson managed just three hits too, including one each from Krupinski, Scott and Lauren Payne as the trio hit 4, 5 and 6 in the lineup. Cara Law (2-1) pitched all six innings, allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts in the loss.
Spring Hill's Caroline Sagrera improved to 8-0 in the circle after striking out nine in seven innings of work. Sagrera's run support came from first baseman Elise deBruler who drove in the winning score on her lone hit. Shortstop Sam Leach scored the run after reaching on a walk.
Krupinski and Scott delivered extra-base hits with a pair of doubles, but the Blue Raiders ended up stranding six on base.
The late drama came after Payne's single when a wild throw let her advance to third and Bowden to second after reaching on a fielder's choice. Egiazarova drew a walk to load the bases, but Collins came up short after a strong at-bat to reach the full count.
The loss ends the longest winning streak in program history after opening the season 13-0.
No. 15 Lindsey Wilson 4, No. 10 Houston-Victoria 2
The slow start continued in game two as it took five innings for Lindsey Wilson to score the game's first run. Bowden singled and Egiazarova drove her home with a deep double to right center, setting up a back-and-forth affair the rest of the way.
Houston-Victoria second baseman Ashley Winegeart hit a one-out single in the bottom half of the inning and later tied it up after hustling home on a misplayed grounder by Scott at shortstop.
Lindsey Wilson didn't get discouraged in the sixth as it answered with a go-ahead run on two hits. Ali Hart singled and stole second, allowing Scott to score her on a hit to left field.
The battle continued into the bottom of the sixth as Krupinski allowed a single and a walk before Cheyanne Knepper came on in relief. Knepper struck out her first batter, but gave up a walk and single from Winegeart to tie it up again at 2-2.
Bowden opened the top half of the seventh the right way for the Blue Raiders with a single, then promptly stole second to set up another go-ahead run. Collins grounded out to the pitcher to move her to third with two outs before coming home on a softly hit ground ball by Antoinette Jenkins.
Jenkins continued the rally with a stolen base of her own and scored the game's fourth run on a single from Whelan through the hole at second. Knepper finished the game out with a pair of groundouts and strikeout on the final batter.
Alex Holland, making her first start for Houston Victoria, scattered 10 hits and allowed four earned runs with six strikeouts in seven innings. Knepper earned the win in 1-2/3 innings with two strikeouts and allowing just one hit.
