No. 16 Softball Gets Crucial MSC Sweep at Cumberland on Monday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – With the help of two solid pitching performances, the 16th-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team swept Cumberland (Tenn.) 7-6 and 3-1 on Monday.

The wins assure the Blue Raiders (43-7, 25-5) of at least a share of the Mid-South Conference Regular-Season Championship and the No. 1 seed at next weekend's conference tournament in Kingsport, Tenn.

Georgetown (Ky.) and Campbellsville (Ky.) are scheduled to play on Tuesday with a Campbellsville win assuring it a share of the league title as well.

The opener was a wild game with runs scored in all but one inning and the lead changing hands three times.

With the score knotted at 5-5 in the sixth, Bowden provided the game winning single, driving home shortstop Madison Scott and first baseman Kristina Krupinski to give the Blue Raiders enough runs to hold off the Bulldogs in the seventh.

Cumberland (33-18, 15-13 MSC) cut the lead to 7-6 on a throwing error during a steal attempt, but had a runner leave third base early on a fly out to bring the game to a close.

Whelan opened the game with a double and later scored on a single from center fielder Ali Hart. The 1-0 lead didn't last long as the Bulldogs struck for three runs on a home run by Kacy Hobbs.

Lindsey Wilson started to chip away in the second inning with a run off an error and finished off the comeback in the third with three runs on four hits to take a 5-3 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bulldogs evened up the score 5-5 with two RBI singles from Allison Blackwood and Hobbs, prior to Bowden producing the winning runs in the sixth.

Jordan Hood (17-2) picked up the win in relief, allowing three runs on five hits through five innings. Krupinski started the game, but gave up three runs on five hits in 1-2/3 innings before exiting for Hood.

Bulldog reliever Jessica Lazano (3-3) took the loss, scattering five hits for two runs in three innings of work.

The nightcap saw Lindsey Wilson win with a great pitching performance from Cara Law after tying the Bulldogs for the game in hits 5-5.

The difference in the game was the Bulldogs hitting a batter, walking another and a crucial error.

Law went the distance, scattering five hits for one run with two strikeouts, while Allison Blackwood (5-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits through six innings.

The Blue Raiders scored the first two runs of the game in the second and third innings which proved to be enough to hold on for the win. Cumberland pushed one across in the bottom of the third on a Megan Lavery single, but that was all its offense could muster against Law.

Lindsey Wilson added an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Whelan.
