Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Ali Hart hit a three-run home run to lift No. 12 Lindsey Wilson over Shawnee State (Ohio) 4-1 in game one, but the Bears outlasted the Blue Raiders 6-5 in 10 innings in the nightcap to secure a split on Saturday at Boone Coleman Field.
Hard finished with two hits for three RBIs and added a walk, while Lauren Payne went 3-for-3 in the win and Andrea Whelan went 3-for-5 in the lengthy loss.
The Blue Raiders waited five innings to take control of game one as Shawnee State led 1-0 after the fourth inning. Payne opened the top of the fifth with a single, outfielder Antoinette Jenkins bunted for a hit and Hart cleared the bases with a blast over the fence in right field on a 3-0 count.
Leading 3-1, added one more run in the sixth as shortstop Madison Scott led off with a single, allowing pinch runner Brittany Graves to later score from second on a Payne single to center field. Graves had moved into scoring position after a single by catcher Jane Egiazarova.
Lindsey Wilson starter Jordan Hood (10-1) closed out the win with two straight 1-2-3 innings. Hood went the distance, allowing just two hits with 11 strikeouts.
The Bears' Ali Thompson (6-5) also pitched a complete game, but scattered nine hits for four runs with six strikeouts and three walks.
Game two was a back-and-fourth battle for nearly all 10 innings.
Both teams produced a run in the first inning as Jenkins bunted on as the leadoff, advanced to second on a wild throw and scored on a single by Scott down the left-field line.
For Shawnee State, it was outfielder Ericka Leighty scoring the early equalizer as she led off with a double and came home on a single by first baseman Holly Brabson. Lindsey Wilson starting pitcher Lauren Seibert gave up the run after recording just one out before being replaced by Cheyanna Knepper.
Knepper threw the following 2-2/3 innings, allowing one run in the third inning after four hits and three strikeouts.
Down 2-1, the Blue Raiders answered again with some two-out hitting. To score, Egiazarova singled, Payne singled and Hood singled to bring Egiazarova home from third.
After a scoreless fifth, Shawnee State went back on top by two runs in the sixth inning.
Leighty produced both runs by herself with a home run to left field. Center fielder Kelsey Jenkins had hit a one-out double to set up the two-run shot.
Lindsey Wilson had one inning left to overcome a 4-2 deficit and the best it could do was send the game to extra innings. Pinch runner Ashley Hughes scored the first run, on the bases for Hood after she led off with a single and coming home on a hit to center by Whelan.
Pinch hitter Travatia Bowden reached on an error, moved to third on Whelan's single and hustled home to tie the game on a sacrifice fly by Hart.
The Blue Raiders held a brief 5-4 lead in the 10th inning after Whelan, acting as the runner on second with the international tie-breaker being used, scooted to third on Hart's fly out and scored on another fly ball by Scott.
Shawnee State, facing Hood in a relief role, fought back for the win with a little held from a Lindsey Wilson error.
After a leadoff pop out, Jenkins reached base on an infield bobble, which allowed tie-breaker runner Hannah Dittoe to advance to third. With runners on the corners, Hood got her second pop out of the inning to put the Blue Raiders one out away from the win.
But Leighty tallied her third hit of the game to bring home Dittoe from third and Jenkins tested the throw from right and was safe at the plate to bring the game to a close.
Hood (10-2) took the loss after 3-2/3 innings to pick up both decisions on the day. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in the loss. Shawnee State's Allie Chapman (7-4) threw all 10 innings, scattering 11 hits for five runs with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Lindsey Wilson is right back on the field at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, hosting Rio Grande (Ohio) in a makeup doubleheader of game's originally scheduled for last Thursday. Both games will be shown on Lindsey Wilson GameCentral with live stats also available.
