Softball falls 8-2 to Thomas in first round of the GCI Gold Bracket Tournament

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Lindsey Wilson softball team fell 8-2 to Thomas (Ga.) University in the Gold Bracket single-elimination Gulf Coast Invitational tournament on Sunday in Mobile.

Lindsey Wilson (14-2) fell behind 1-0 early in the elimination game as Thomas plated a run on an RBI single by Carmen Nadal in the first inning.

The Blue Raiders responded with a run in the second inning when Amanda Trampe reached on a missed catch by the Night Hawks and scored on an Abbi Goedde RBI single to tie it at 1-1.

Lindsey Wilson took a 2-1 lead in the third on a Trampe RBI single that scored Andrea Whelan.

Thomas' starting pitcher Summer Rose settled down after the third inning, limiting the Blue Raiders to no runs on two hits with two strikeouts in the final three innings of the game.

The Night Hawks offense would get going in the fourth inning as they scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead before Jasmine Matchen was able to get the final out of the inning. Thomas scored the first run of the inning on an RBI single by Lindsey Young followed by Chandler Seay bunt that scored Kallie Shirley to give Thomas a 3-2 lead. They would make it 5-2 on a Alex VanWagner two-run single.

The Blue Raiders had a chance in the fifth inning to put runs on the board after getting the first two on but Rose got the next three hitters to fly out to end the inning.

Thomas added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to seal the 8-2 win in the first round of the GCI bracket to eliminate the Blue Raiders.

Whelan finished the game 2-for-4 with one run while Trampe went 1-for-3 with a one and an RBI. Trampe pitched 3.2 innings in the loss giving up one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks. Jordan Hood pitched one scoreless inning for the Blue Raiders.

Rose pitched a complete game in the win for Thomas, giving up two runs - one earned - on five hits with three strikeouts. Aimee Johnson and Nadal both went 2-for-4 in the game with three RIBs between the two hitters.

Lindsey Wilson is back in the circle on Wednesday, March 12 in their home and Mid-South Conference opener against St. Catharine with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Lindsey Wilson Park.
