No. 9 Softball uses 8-run fourth inning in game two to split doubleheader with Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- No. 9 Lindsey Wilson softball earns split with Shawnee State (Ohio) University on Sunday, April 6 at Boone Coleman Field after the Blue Raiders scored eight runs in the fourth inning of game two and secure a 10-0 win.

Lindsey Wilson (30-4, 16-2 MSC) fell in game one 3-2 as Casey Bryan and Jasmine Matchen allowed a combined on earned run in seven innings pitched.

Shawnee State used a two-run second inning in game one to take an early 2-0 lead on Lindsey Wilson. With one out in the inning, Tara Duncan reached base on hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a Blue Raider throwing error that gave Shawnee State runners on first and second. Heidi Hall hit an RBI single down the right field line to score Duncan and take a 1-0 lead. Kelsey Jenkins singled in Tara Prater, who reached on the earlier throwing error by Lindsey Wilson, to make it 2-0.

The Blue Raiders would cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third as Andrea Whelan doubled down the left field line and scored on a Madison Scott single to center.

Bryan set the Bears down in order in the third inning with two ground outs and a fiy out to keep it a one run lead heading into the fourth. Allie Chapman responded for Shawnee State with a 1-2-3 inning of her own.

The Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth after Duncan reached on a double and scored on a Prater single to center field to make it 3-1.

Matchen relieved Bryan in the sixth inning and set the side down in order to give the Blue Raiders one last chance in the top of seventh.

Bailey Mize started the inning off with a single down the right field line and was pinch ran for by Ashley Hughes. Hughes scored on an Abbi Goedde double to make it 3-2. With no outs and a runner in scoring position, Chapman got Travatia Bowden to fly out and Savannah Madison to ground out. Jordan Hood, pinch hitting for Ashley Evans, struck out to end the game as Lindsey Wilson suffered just its second Mid-South Conference loss of the season.

Scott went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game one and Bowden finished the game 2-for-3.

In game two, the Blue Raiders took an early 2-0 lead as Krupinski reached base on a single to the pitcher's mound and advanced to second on a passed ball. With a runner in scoring position, Amanda Trampe hit an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0. Mize followed Trampe with a single through the hole at second to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Hood was stellar in the circle as she retired the first five Bears batters before allowing a single to Foster. Prater grounded out to shortstop to end the second inning. Hood followed the second inning by striking out the side in the third inning.

In the fourth, Bowden and Hood led off with a pair of solo home runs to make it 4-0 and kickstart an eight-run inning. Trampe made it 6-0 after a two-RBI single that scored Evans and Whelan. Mize would make it 8-0 two pitches later as she hit a two-run home run over the center field fence. Goedde reached on a single and scored when Bowden hit her second home run of the inning, a two-run shot to left field, to take a 10-0 lead.

Hood retired the final six batters to give the Blue Raiders a 10-0 win and a split at Shawnee State. Hood finished the game allowing two hits while striking out seven as she recorded her 12th win of the season. Trampe went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bowden added a two home runs as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Mize finished the game with a home run and three RBIs.

Lindsey Wilson is back in the circle on Tuesday, April 8 when they host No. 22 Campbellsville (Ky.) University at Lindsey Wilson Park at 3 p.m. CT.
