DANVILLE, Ky. – No. 9 Lindsey Wilson softball defeated Cumberlands (Ky.) 4-3 in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament Thursday at Millennium Park.

The Blue Raiders (44-7), the top seed in the tournament, struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Andrea Whelan led off with a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. A passed ball allowed Whelan to plate Lindsey Wilson's first run. Amanda Trampe was then hit by a pitch and scored on a Bailey Mize double to deep right center field.

Lindsey Wilson added a third run in the third inning when Mize singled to right center field, scoring Kristina Krupinksi, but Mize was the final out of the inning when she was caught stretching.

The Patriots (16-34) threatened in the top of the fifth as they scored three runs on three hits and two Blue Raider errors. With Cumberlands base runners on first and second, Lindsey Wilson ended the damage with a 4-3 double play.

The 3-3 tie did not last long as the Blue Raiders plated the deciding run in the bottom of the inning. Brittney Graves started things off by singling to right center, and then moved to third base as Cumberlands' Kenly Lambert issued back-to-back walks to load the bases. Trampe was able to sky a pitch deep enough to left field to allow Graves to tag up and beat the throw to the plate.

Jordan Hood shut the Bulldogs down in the final two innings, striking out one and inducing four groundouts and a pop fly to get the complete-game victory. The junior allowed three unearned runs on four hits while striking out four and issuing no free passes. Lambert took the loss as she was tagged with three earned runs on hits and four walks through six innings. Mize batted 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead Lindsey Wilson batters. Bethany Davis, Jill Bunnell and Lambert each batted 1-for-3 to lead Cumberlands.

Lindsey Wilson will face fifth-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) in a 9 a.m. CT game on Friday. The Bulldogs (36-18-1) upset fourth-seeded Rio Grande (Ohio) 6-4 in the other 4 p.m. CT game on Thursday. The Blue Raiders went 4-0 against the Bulldogs in the regular season, winning doubleheaders on March 18 and April 10.
