DANVILLE, Ky. -- No. 9 Lindsey Wilson softball team lost 3-1 to Cumberland (Tenn.) University in game five of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky., Friday morning.
Lindsey Wilson (44-8) now moves to the elimination bracket where they play the winner of the Shawnee State (Ohio) University and St. Catharine (Ky.) College game at 1:30 p.m. CT today.
The Blue Raiders held an early 1-0 lead on Cumberland after Casey Bryan got through the first two innings with one hit allowed and one walk. In the bottom of the second, Travatia Bowden took the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.
Bryan continued to pitch well putting the Bulldogs down in order in the third but a missed catch by the Blue Raiders allowed two runs to score to give Cumberland a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Jessica Lozano relieved Courtney Maynard in the bottom of the fourth and got the Blue Raiders to go in order. Maynard finished the game giving up one run on three hits in three innings pitched.
In the fifth inning, Lindsey Wilson's Savannah Madison reached base on a single. Brittney Graves followed with a bunt pop out to the pitcher's mound that forced an out at first to give the Bulldogs two outs in the inning. Lozano got Andrea Whelan to pop out next and end the inning.
In the sixth inning, Cumberland's Emily Nicholson singled up the middle to start the sixth inning and was courtesy ran for by Katelynn Stoll. Bryan got the next two batters, but a walk to Kaliegh Pearce put a runner in scoring position. Sarah Murray followed the walk with an RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Hood came in to relieve Bryant with the bases loaded was able to get Devon Jamerson to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Lozano got the next six Lindsey Wilson batters to give Cumberland a 3-1 upset victory and stay in the winners bracket.
Bryan is now 20-5 after the loss, giving up one earned run on seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Bowden finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run.
Lozano (10-5) recorded the win for Cumberland, going four innings and allowing just one hit to the Blue Raiders.
