DANVILLE, Ky. -- No. 9 Lindsey Wilson softball used the long ball to defeat Shawnee State (Ohio) University 15-8 as they hit six home runs in an elimination game on Friday in the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament at Millennium Park.
Lindsey Wilson (45-8) fell behind early as they committed three errors in the first inning to allow three runs to score. Kelsey Jenkins and Hannah Dittoe both scored for Shawnee State after the Blue Raiders bobbled two ground balls. Kirsti Yates drove in the second run of the inning on an RBI single down the leftfield line as the Bears took a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third, Kristina Krupinski smashed a three-run home run over the centerfield fence to tie the game at 3-3. Bailey Mize was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Abbi Goedde doubled to left field and Travatia Bowden followed with an RBI single to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 lead.
Shawnee State (26-24) answered the Blue Raiders with three more runs in the top of the second. The Bears had runners on first and second when Dittoe hit an RBI single to score Heidi Hall who had reached base to leadoff the inning and make it 4-4. Yates followed Halls single with a two-RBI doube to deep right-center field to give Shawnee State a 6-4 lead.
Kristina Krupinski tied the game in the second inning at 6-6 with her second home run of the game, this one a two-run shot over the centerfield fence.
Jordan Hood settled down in the circle after she gave the Blue Raiders an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run to over the left field fence. Hood set the side down in order in the third inning and loaded the bases in the fourth inning with no outs but was able to get out of the jam as she struck out one and got two Bears batters to pop out to end the inning with no damage.
Lindsey Wilson continued the home run barrage as they scored two more in the fourth inning off a Mize two-run home run followed by an Abbi Goedde's solo home run to give Lindsey Wilson a 11-6 lead.
The Blue Raiders made it 13-6 in the fifth inning after Andrea Whelan hit the sixth Lindsey Wilson home run of the day over the centerfield fence. In the sixth inning, Shawnee State scored two runs as Yates and Tara Duncan both drove in a run on a single and a double respectively to cut the lead to 13-8.
Lindsey Wilson added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as Bowden and Hood reached base on singles followed by a Whelan two-RBI single to give the Blue Raiders a 15-8 lead.
Hood got the final three outs in the seventh after giving up the leadoff single to start the inning.
Hood is now 21-3 as she pitched a complete game allowing eight runs - five earned - on 12 hits, striking out seven and walking two.
Whelan finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Krupinski went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. Mize and Hood both finished the game with a pair of hits each and two RBIs each.
Allie Chapman took the loss for the Bears to run her record to 15-13. Yates finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIS. Barrett went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Dittoe added a hit, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Lindsey Wilson plays Saturday, May 3 in an MSC Softball Tournament elimination game against Campbellsville (Ky.) at 1 p.m. CT.
