Strong pitching, timely hitting lifts No. 4 Softball to sweep at Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

THOMASVILLE, Ga. -- No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball remained perfect on the season with a doubleheader sweep of host Thomas (Ga.) today at Armory Field.

The Blue Raiders (4-0) won a pitching duel 3-1 in today's opener and an early home run propelled Lindsey Wilson to a 6-3 win in game two. The wins ended Thomas' eight-game winning streak.

Bailey Mize supplied the game-winning hit for the Blue Raiders in today's opener.

With runners at second and third in a 1-1 game in the top of the sixth inning, Mize sent a ball back up the middle and into centerfield scoring Chelsea Showers -- who led off the inning with a double. Abbi Goedde's RBI sacrifice fly added an insurance run en route to the win.

Lyndsey Parden (1-0) -- making her Lindsey Wilson debut in the circle -- allowed just one run and six hits in 5-2/3 innings. She finished with six strikeouts while earning the win. Jordan Hood came on for a four-out save allowing two hits in 1-1/3 innings.

Thomas' Katie Lopez (1-1) suffered the loss allowing all three runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.

Both teams dented the scoreboard with a run in the third inning.

Jenna Firestein doubled home Sydney Fourman to push the Blue Raiders in front 1-0. Thomas responded with the equalizer as Kayla Johnson stole home on a double steal in the home half of the inning.

That run would be on the only score in the game for a Night Hawk team that averaged more than six runs a game entering the doubleheader

In game two, Andrea Whelan hit a two-run home run in a three-run first inning and the Blue Raiders never looked back in a 6-3 win.

Casey Bryan (2-0) limited the Night Hawks to an unearned run through six innings before giving up back-to-back homers in the seventh. Bryan -- who won for the second time in as many days -- surrendered all three runs on eight hits while collecting three strikeouts.

Hood came on in relief and recorded the final two outs on six pitches -- including a strikeout.

Lindsey Wilson equaled its first-game run production in the first inning of the nightcap.

Whelan's homer and a Bailey Mize RBI triple gave the Blue Raiders the 3-0 lead. Lindsey Wilson has led 23 of the 28 innings played this season, including never trailing.

After Thomas scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Lindsey Wilson plated two runs in fourth with singles by Firestein, Showers and Brittney Graves. The Night Hawks added to the Blue Raider inning with a pair of errors in the inning.

Goedde provided a RBI double in the fifth to close out the Lindsey Wilson scoring.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 on the first day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Blue Raiders play No. 2-ranked William Carey (Ala.) in the opener of the classic.
