Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. -- No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball defeated a pair of ranked opponents today during the opening day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association-NAIA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex.
The Blue Raiders opened Pool 4 play with a 3-2 win over No. 2-ranked William Carey (Miss.) and closed out the day with a 9-0, 5-inning win over No. 21-ranked Oklahoma Baptist.
Lindsey Wilson used the long ball along with solid pitching in both wins.
Sydney Fourman hit a pair of home runs and drove in all three runs to lift the Blue Raiders (6-0) to the 3-2 win over the last season's national runner-ups. Jordan Hood (2-0) struck out 11 Crusaders in the complete-game win.
Fourman gave the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead in the top of the third after blasting her first collegiate home run out of the park. Travatia Bowden opened the inning with a single and scored in front of Fourman to give the Blue Raiders the lead.
William Carey's Lauren Russell cut the Crusaders' deficit in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Fourman answered with her second homer of the game -- this one a leadoff, solo shot in the top of the fifth for a 3-1 lead.
Hood -- who scattered seven hits -- recorded at least one strikeout in each of the first six innings, including striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth to preserve the 3-1 lead.
But the Crusaders (5-5) inched within a run in the sixth following a RBI single by Tiffany De Vore to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-2. William Carey threatened to tie or perhaps take the lead in the sixth, but Hood forced a ground out to third base with bases loaded to close out the inning and help the Blue Raiders keep the 3-2 advantage.
Hood prevented any dramatics in the bottom of the seventh inning, retiring the Crusaders in order to close out the complete-game win.
Chelsea Showers homered and drove in five runs and Lyndsey Parden tossed a one-hit, five-inning shutout in the Blue Raiders' 9-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist.
Lindsey Wilson scored in each of its four at-bats, including a four-run second and a three-run third to coast to the win.
Parden surrendered three walks while striking out three Bison (3-6) en route to improving to 2-0 on the season.
Showers drove in a pair in the second inning and hit a three-run homer in the third to lead the Blue Raider offense. Abbi Goedde also homered and provided a pair of RBIs in the win.
Lindsey Wilson faces No. 16-ranked Central Methodist (Mo.) at 11:30 a.m. CT on Saturday in the final game of pool play. Bracket play begins Saturday afternoon and continues through Sunday at the South Commons Softball Complex.
