Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split the final two games of a four-game series with No. 24 Campbellsville on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Blue Raiders (17-6, 1-3 Mid-South Conference) fell in the opener on a walk off single 4-3 before bouncing back with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap over the Tigers (12-5, 3-1 MSC).
Lindsey Wilson scored the go-ahead run in the top half of the seventh inning of the opener, but the host Tigers rallied with a game-winning single with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.
With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh, Lindsey Wilson opened the inning with a pair of bunts that the Tigers were unable to handle to put runners on first and second. Andrea Whelan advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, followed by Amanda Trampe hitting a shallow sacrifice fly to centerfield. Jenna Firestein raced home from third after the catch and had to tip-toe around the catcher to avoid the tag and score to put the Blue Raiders ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, starting pitcher Jordan Hood began the inning with a hit batsman, putting the tying run on. A sac bunt and groundout moved the runner to third with two outs. Hood had the next batter down with a 0-2 count, but then hit her with a pitch to put the go-ahead run on first.
Brianna Scott then stepped to the plate at hit a single that dropped right in the middle of the Blue Raider defense in shallow center. As both runners were moving on the crack of the bat, Zatoria Leavell scored easily form third and Jacqueline Roof, who was two steps from third as the ball dropped, continued on home as the throw to the plate was off the mark and the Tigers walked off with the 4-3 win.
The loss would be the third-straight, one-run loss of the series for the Blue Raiders.
Earlier in the game, Campbellsville plated a run in the bottom of the second, but Whelan answered with a solo shot, her sixth home run of the season, in the fourth inning to make it 1-1.
Lindsey Wilson took its first lead of the day in the next inning as three-straight two-out singles by Chelsea Showers, Whelan and Trampe scored one run. A Bailey Mize walk loaded the bases, but Abbi Goedde was unable to produce as she grounded out to end the inning.
Campbellsville quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own to tie things again at 2-2. The sixth inning went by scoreless before the seventh inning run exchange.
Hood (5-2) suffered the loss giving up three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Offensively, Showers went 3-for-4 and Whelan finished 2-for-3. The Blue Raiders left a total of eight runners on base in the loss.
Campbellsville's Victoria Decker (6-3) picked up the win giving up three runs – two earned – on eight hits with five strikeouts.
The finale of the series saw the Blue Raiders bounce back with a 5-3 win over the Tigers.
Lindsey Wilson benefited from patience at the plate in the second inning. A walk and three-consecutive hit-by-pitch scored one run and kept the bases loaded. A bunt by Firestein scored another, but a fly out and strikeout ended the inning and left the bases loaded.
The Tigers clawed on back with back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the frame.
After a scoreless third, the Blue Raiders were able to tack on another two runs after Firestein, Showers and Whelan opened the inning with three singles. Travatia Bowden later singled to score another run but Whelan was thrown out at home to keep it at 4-1.
Campbellsville refused to go away as a solo shot in the bottom of the inning made it 4-2.
The teams traded runs in the sixth before the seventh went by scoreless and the Blue Raiders held on for the 5-3 win.
Casey Bryan (7-2) picked up the win in the circle allowing all three runs on six hits with five strikeouts without issuing a walk.
Firestein finished the game 3-for-5 as Showers and Trampe each recorded a pair of hits.
Neely Quint (5-3) took the loss giving up five runs – four earned – on 12 hits.
Up next for the Blue Raiders is the 2015 home opener at Lindsey Wilson Park as the Blue Raiders host Cumberland (Tenn.) on March 24 at 2 p.m. CT.
