Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team was finally able to open the home part of their 2015 schedule and did so with a sweep of visiting Cumberland (Tenn.) on Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (19-6, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) won the first game of the doubleheader 7-4 before an 11-2 five-inning victory in the finale against the Bulldogs (7-13, 3-3 MSC).
Lindsey Wilson got complete game efforts in both wins from starting pitchers Lyndsey Parden and Jordan Hood.
Parden (6-2) gave up four earned runs on six hits in her seven innings in the opening game and Hood (6-2) followed with a two run – one earned – performance on three hits in her five inning shortened game. The duo combined for 13 strikeouts on the day.
Andrea Whelan led the offensive charge pushing five RBIs across the plate in the two games. Amanda Trampe and Chelsea Showers each had three RBIs while Hood added two. Trampe totaled four hits on the day.
The Blue Raiders wasted little time to get things going in game one as Whelan hit a two-out, solo home run to start the day. Three-straight singles scored another run to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
The lead was doubled in the bottom of the second on a ground out by Showers and a fielder's choice by Whelan to make it 4-0.
The Blue Raiders tacked on one in the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-0, but were unable to push across the eighth run that would have ended the game early due to the run rule.
The Bulldogs trimmed the lead after a three-run home run by Brittany Rasmussen made it 7-3 in the sixth. Parden gave up a two-out solo home run in the top of the seventh, but was able to get the final batter to pop out to end the game.
Cumberland's Kristen Abell (5-4) took the loss giving up seven runs – six earned – on eight hits in the complete game effort.
Game two saw the Blue Raiders fall behind for the first time all day as Hood gave up a leadoff home run to Kassydi Montgomery to begin the game. But Lindsey Wilson quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the first after a single and back-to-back doubles by Trampe and Bailey Mize made it 2-1.
The Blue Raiders were then able to push five runs across in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of Cumberland errors and three hits, including a bases clearing double by Whelan to make it 7-2.
The teams traded one run each in the third before Lindsey Wilson poured on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-2. Hood scored two runs on a double and Jenna Firestein singled home Sydney Fourman for the final run of the game.
Hood then sat down the final three batters in the top of the fifth, two via the strikeout, to secure an early end to the 11-2 victory.
Leah Newsome (2-8) took the loss for the Bulldogs in the nightcap giving up eight runs – three earned – on eight hits in her two innings.
The Blue Raiders now host Pikeville (Ky.) in a four-game series set to begin on Friday with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. CT.
