Fast starts help No. 8 Softball sweep doubleheader at Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Cumberland (Tenn.) on Tuesday using a pair of run-rule shortened games at CU Softball Field.

The Blue Raiders (29-6, 13-3 MSC) won the opener 15-4 in five innings, and followed with a five-inning, 8-0 shutout in the nightcap over the host Bulldogs (9-19, 5-9 MSC).

Lindsey Wilson racked up 25 hits across the two games led by Andrea Whelan's six hits and six RBIs. Amanda Trampe and Bailey Mize both finished with five RBIs, Mize recording all five in the opener on a 3-for-3 performance. Travatia Bowden added three RBIs on the day.

The opening game remained tight until the top half of the fifth inning when the Blue Raiders exploded for 11 runs.

Lindsey Wilson opened with a four-run first inning thanks to two-run home runs by Whelan and Mize. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half adding a run each in second and third innings to make it 4-2.

But then the Blue Raiders went to work in the top of the fifth, scoring 11 times to put the game out of reach. Cumberland drew two back in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to rally for any more.

Starting pitcher Casey Bryan (12-2) picked up the win tossing 4-1/3 innings allowing four earned runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Blue Raiders once again started fast as Lindsey Wilson plated five runs in the top half of the first inning. Lindsey Wilson added one run in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 8-0.

The Bulldog offense was shut down by starting pitcher Lyndsey Parden throughout the game. Parden (10-2) went the complete game, her seventh of the season, giving up just three hits while striking out seven.

Cumberland was led by Kassydi Montgomery who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, all in the opening game. The Bulldogs managed just eight hits in the two losses.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Friday as they host Shawnee State (Ohio) in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
