Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team advanced to the championship game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Lindsey Wilson Bracket with a 10-6 victory over Southeastern (Fla.) Tuesday afternoon.
Lindsey Wilson now faces fourth-seeded St. Francis (Ill.) in the title game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT.
The Blue Raiders (47-6) posted a seven-run frame in the third inning, led by Travatia Bowden's grand slam, her second home run in as many days.
The Fire (40-13) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Sam Gale added an RBI single, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from Brandee Pietrzak.
Lindsey Wilson answered in the bottom half when Amanda Trampe hit a two-out RBI double to score Andrea Whelan to cut the lead in half.
After bursting out for two runs in the first inning, Southeastern was held scoreless through the next three innings.
Jordan Hood came in to relieve Casey Bryan in the circle and retired three-straight batters before allowing a double. Kaleigh Floyd then singled up the middle, but a strong throw from Chelsea Showers in center field gunned down Pietrzak at home to keep the deficit at 2-1.
The Blue Raider offense found a rhythm in the third inning scoring seven runs to take a decisive lead.
Showers hit an RBI single scoring Brittany Graves and advanced to third base on a Southeastern error. Whelan then singled up the middle scoring Showers to give Lindsey Wilson its first lead of the game at 3-2.
With the bases loaded, Abbi Goedde added an RBI single scoring Whelan and kept the bases loaded. Bowden then sent a shot over the left field fence on a 0-1 count for a grand slam giving the Blue Raiders an 8-2 lead.
Southeastern started to slowly make a comeback in the fifth inning when Pietrzak hit an RBI single scoring Brianna Perez. Sam Gale then was able to steal home on a double-steal attempt to cut the lead to 8-4.
Hood then got Katie Dickey to ground out to third with two runners on base ending the Fire's threat.
Goedde added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth by smashing a home run to deep center field on a 2-0 count.
The Fire's offense continued to put the pressure on the Blue Raiders adding a run in the sixth inning.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the sixth, Gale singled up the middle to score Annie Weaver. Hood who stayed poised throughout the suspense, then got Pietrzak to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Showers reached first after being hit by a pitch and later stole second base with one out. Trampe then added her second RBI of the game doubling to deep left-center field scoring Showers to give Lindsey Wilson a 10-5 lead.
With a five run lead and three outs to go Lindsey Wilson held a comfortable lead, but the Fire refused to go away quietly.
Kaleigh Floyd led off the inning reaching on a Blue Raider error. With one out, Bri Girardin reached on an infield bunt single to put runners at first and third base.
Weaver then added an RBI ground out scoring Floyd, but the threat ended as Hood struck out Brittany LaCasse to end the game.
Bowden led Lindsey Wilson with four RBIs, while Trampe and Goedde each added two.
Gale and Pietrzak led the Fire going a combined 5-for-7 and totaling two RBIs each.
Hood (15-2) earned the victory throwing 5-1/3 innings giving up 10 hits, but just one earned run and striking out two.
Cat Maldonado (12-3) surrendered the loss pitching three innings and giving up six earned runs on six hits.
St. Francis won two-straight games later in the day by defeating Marian (Ind.) 8-5 and Southeastern 3-0 to advance to the championship game against Lindsey Wilson.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, with the "if necessary" game to follow.
