LEWISTON, Idaho -- It will not take long for the Lindsey Wilson baseball team to be introduced to the 2015 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series.
Playing in its first NAIA World Series, Lindsey Wilson faces Vanguard (Calif.) in the double-elimination tournament opening game. First pitch is at 11 a.m. CT.
The Blue Raiders (41-17) earned their World Series berth after sweeping through the NAIA Opening Round - Kingsport Bracket. The then-No. 2 seed Blue Raiders beat top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan twice during the tournament, including 4-1 in the championship game.
Lindsey Wilson -- the No. 7 seed -- comes to Lewiston winners of 14 of its last 15 games, including winning the Mid-South Conference and opening round tournaments.
The Blue Raider pitching staff has been outstanding during the postseason. Lindsey Wilson pitchers own a 7-1 record with a 1.50 ERA while holding its opponents to a .222 batting average. Lindsey Wilson is 12th in the NAIA this season and third among the teams in the World Series with a 3.13 team ERA.
After struggling during the MSC Tournament -- hitting just .179 as a team -- the Blue Raider offense averaged more than six runs a game in Kingsport.
Ryan Harper leads the Blue Raider hitters with a .400 average while MSC Player of the Year Alex Bautista is hitting .383 with 19 home runs -- third best in the NAIA this season. In all, six different Blue Raiders are hitting at least .300 this season.
Vanguard (38-20) returns to the NAIA Baseball World Series for a second time after winning the Santa Clarita Bracket as the tournament's No. 4 seed. The Lions -- who finished fourth in the 1985 World Series -- beat each of the four teams in Santa Clarita to punch their World Series ticket.
No. 10 seed Vanguard comes to Lewiston with a .285 team batting average led by Justin Vega and Jose Rojas who each are hitting .333 this season. The Lions own a 3.39 team ERA while allowing opponents to hit .249 this season.
The winner advances to face No. 2 seed Faulkner (Ala.) at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday. The loser falls into the consolation bracket and meets the loser of No. 3 seed Tabor (Kan.) and No. 6 seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
