SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Lindsey Wilson softball team suffered its first loss of the 2015 NAIA World Series, presented by Security National Bank and Morningside College, at the hands of defending national champion Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) by a 5-1 score on Monday night at the Jensen Softball Complex.
The third-seeded Blue Raiders (49-7) will now face top-seeded LSU Alexandria (La.) in an elimination game at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
Lindsey Wilson quickly fell behind to the WarHawks (44-8) in the bottom of the first.
Katie Spain singled for AUM and after stealing second, scored on a two-out double by Jade Sasser. Kayla Hale then followed with another double to score Sasser and make it a 2-0 game.
The WarHawks doubled their lead in the second with a two-run home run by Laci Driggers to take a 4-0 lead. Blue Raider starting pitcher Lyndsey Parden was then lifted from the game in favor of Jordan Hood.
Hood kept the damage to a minimum retiring a string of seven-straight batters, including four via strikeout, before finally being tagged for a run in the bottom of the fifth after a double and single made it a 5-0 game.
Lindsey Wilson finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth after Jenna Firestein hit a bunt single to start the inning. Chelsea Showers then walked and a groundout by Andrea Whelan moved the runners to second and third. Amanda Trampe then singled to center to score Firestein and make it a 5-1 game, but Showers and Trampe would remain stranded on the base paths after a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
Sydney Fourman hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game and the Blue Raiders saw their program-record 33-game win streak come to a halt.
Hood pitched well in relief allowing just one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts. Parden (13-3) took the loss giving up four earned runs on four hits in 1-1/3 innings.
Auburn-Montgomery ace Cassie Jones (33-4) mowed down the Lindsey Wilson lineup striking out 14 batters en route to her 33rd win of the season, the most in the NAIA, allowing just six hits in the complete-game effort. Jones has now struck out at least 10 batters in eight-consecutive games, but the Blue Raiders did snap her 37-inning scoreless streak.
The Blue Raiders now face elimination with a consolation bracket matchup against top-seeded LSU Alexandria. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at the Jensen Softball Complex.
