No. 11 Softball takes two on Saturday to complete four-game sweep of Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — No. 11 softball swept a doubleheader with Mid-South Conference opponent Pikeville on Saturday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep.

The Blue Raiders (22-10, 7-3 MSC) defeated the Bears (7-16, 1-7 MSC) 7-6, in a come-from-behind victory in game one, and 9-0 in game two.

Sydney Fourman and Bailey Mize combined to drive in nine of Lindsey Wilson's 16 runs on the day. Fourman garnered five RBIs and Mize tallied four RBIs in the two-game sweep. They each hit a home run on the day.

GAME 1

With the Blue Raiders trailing 5-3 and down to their final out in the top of the seventh, Fourman came to bat with the bases loaded and delivered a bases clearing double to power Lindsey Wilson to a 7-6 comeback victory in game one.

Lindsey Wilson jumped out 1-0 in the top of the first when Fourman laced a double to left field that scored Cassie Kooker.

Pikeville responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the second, but the Blue Raiders plated another run in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead when Amy Rogers and Jenna Firestein connected for back-to-back doubles.

The Bears fought back with four runs in the bottom of the third. Amber Murrell recorded an RBI single, and Jillian Bohnert hit a three-run home run to put Lindsey Wilson down 5-2.

After neither team scored in the fourth or fifth frames, the Blue Raiders began their comeback with one run in the sixth. Kooker led off the inning with single up the middle of the diamond. Pilgrim then reached base on an error, and Fourman walked to load the bases. Mize made the score 5-3 with an RBI groundout scoring Kooker, but Pikeville's pitcher Lindsay Floyd limited the damage to one run by retiring the next two batters.

Lyndsey Parden, who pitched a complete game for Lindsey Wilson, tossed a scoreless sixth to keep the Blue Raiders' chances alive going into the seventh.

Abbi Goedde began the Blue Raider rally with a double to start the inning. Rogers and Firestein then loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and nobody out. Floyd attempted to pitch around the two singles by recording a fly out and a ground ball for a fielder's choice. The stage was set for Fourman, who connected for the two-out bases clearing double to put Lindsey Wilson up 6-5. Fourman later scored on an error for the Blue Raiders' seventh run.

Pikeville plated one run in the bottom of the seventh on a home run by Hollie Hinkle, but Parden retired the next three batters to secure the victory.

Parden improved to 12-3 on the season for Lindsey Wilson and Floyd fell to 3-9 for Pikeville.

GAME 2

Casey Bryan pitched a three-hit shutout and the Blue Raider offense erupted for nine runs in a 9-0 run-rule shortened game two victory.

Bryan held Pikeville to three hits while striking out six batters in a six-inning complete game performance. She allowed one hit over the first five innings of the game.

Neither team scored until the top of the third when Lindsey Wilson plated the first two runs of the game. Goedde, who reached base on a walk, later scored on a passed ball for the first run. Firestein, who singled and advanced to third with the help of two passed balls, scored on a steal of home.

The Blue Raiders tacked on one run in the fourth when Fourman connected for her 12th home run of the season.

After Bryan held the Bears scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, Lindsey Wilson scored four runs in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-0. Mize launched a three-run home run that scored Firestein and Fourman. Callum Pilgrim then doubled, and later scored on a a single by Rogers for the the final run of the inning.

The Blue Raiders tallied two more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-0 and put the run rule into effect. Kooker drove in the first run of the inning with a single that scored pinch runner Mackenzie Jackson. Amber Foukes drove in the final run of the game when Firestein raced home on a sacrifice fly.

Pikeville showed life in the bottom of the sixth, but Bryan worked around two singles to end the game.

Bryan improved to 9-6 on the year for Lindsey Wilson and Alexandra Quill dropped to 4-6 for Pikeville.

The Blue Raiders return to action for a doubleheader at MSC foe St. Catharine (Ky.) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. CT.
