Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team split a pair of low-scoring games on Sunday afternoon with Union (Ky.) at Lindsey Wilson Park.
The eighth-ranked Blue Raiders (9-3) won the opener 2-0, but fell in the nightcap 3-2 in extra innings to the Bulldogs (5-8) on a day where Lindsey Wilson managed just six hits in 15 total innings.
GAME 1 – Lindsey Wilson 2, Union 0
Lindsey Wilson managed just a single hit, but still came away with a 2-0 victory over Union after a pair of costly, late-game errors by the Bulldogs.
The Blue Raider offense had just one baserunner in the opening four innings of play against Union pitcher Rachel Rhode as Amanda McIver reached base via walk in the second inning. McIver recorded the lone LWC hit in the win after a one-out double in the fifth. Lindsey Wilson later had a runner on third with one out in the inning, but a line out and strike out ended the threat.
The deadlock was finally broken in the bottom of the sixth with the help of a pair of Bulldog errors and some free passes, all coming with two outs.
A hit by pitch and two walks loaded the bases for LWC. McIver then hit a grounder back to the pitcher, but the throw to first went in the dirt, allowing pinch runner Madison Bryant to score and keep the bases loaded. Cassie Kooker then reached after a bobble that allowed Amber Foukes to score for the 2-0 lead.
Union put one runner on in the top of the seventh with one out, but a groundout and fly out ended threat to give LWC the 2-0 win.
While the Blue Raider offense was held in check by Rhode, Taylor Slade (2-1) tossed a complete-game shutout for Lindsey Wilson in the circle, scattering seven hits throughout the game. The freshman struck out four and did not issue a walk.
GAME 2 – Lindsey Wilson 2, Union 3 (8 innings)
Lindsey Wilson led 2-1 after four innings before Union tied things up in the top of the fifth when Jennifer Bazylak legged out a slow roller in the infield with two outs to tie the game at 2-2. After neither team was able to push a run across in the sixth nor seventh, despite putting runners in scoring position, the game went into extra innings with the international tiebreaker rule in effect.
Union moved their runner to third on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a sacrifice fly with Bazylak just beating out the throw to home to put Union up 3-2.
In the bottom half of the eighth, a pop out on a bunt attempt, a pop out to foul territory and a pop out to the infield handed the Blue Raiders a 3-2 loss.
Earlier in the game, Union took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out double. The Blue Raiders responded with a run in the second after an RBI groundout by Lauren Lett. Lindsey Wilson then took the lead in the third with a solo home run by Foukes that clanged off the left-field foul pole to make it 2-1.
Casey Bryan (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle. She entered in the top of the sixth and struck out five of the six batters she faced without allowing a hit or a run. The run scored by Union was charged as a "team run" as a result of the international tiebreaker rule. Bryan came on in relief of Lett who tossed 5-1/3 innings allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Caitlynn Estevez (2-1) earned the win for Union after tossing three shutout innings allowing just one hit in relief. Rhode picked up her first save of the season after pitching a perfect eighth inning.
Callum Pilgrim was the lone Blue Raider with multiple hits in the game two loss. Haley Lyell went 2-for-3 in the victory for Union.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Tuesday when the Blue Raiders travel to Bryan (Tenn.) for a doubleheader.
