No. 8 Softball sweeps weekend series against Pikeville with two wins on Sunday, 9-0 and 4-0

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team completed a four game sweep of Pikeville (Ky.) on Sunday at Lindsey Wilson Park winning 9-0 (five innings), 4-0.

Abby Whelan led the way for the Blue Raiders (16-7, 4-0 MSC) going 5-for-5 on the day driving in two runs. Starting with the second game of Saturday's doubleheader Whelan now has a hit in six-consecutive at-bats. Callum Pilgrim went a combined 4-for-7 driving in a run.

Game 1 Lindsey Wilson 9, Pikeville 0 (five innings)

After a Cassie Kooker lead off single in the bottom of the first inning Pilgrim then doubled to deep-left center to score Kooker to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead. Lindsey Wilson pushed across two more runs in the second inning. Bailey Mize reached on a dropped popup with two outs. After a Whelan single and a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third Bailey Parsons drove in both runners to increase the Blue Raider lead to 3-0.

With the help of two Pikeville (6-14, 0-4 MSC) errors the Blue Raiders were able to push across six runs in the fourth inning. Mize hit a lead off double then Whelan hit a single to advance Mize to third. The two would come around to score on misplayed grounder to increase the lead to 5-0. Sydney Fourman, Amber Foukes and Amy Rogers all drove in a run to make the lead 8-0. Foukes scored on a ground out to increase the lead to 9-0.

Casey Bryan retired the side in the fifth with two strikeouts to end the game due to run rule. Bryan (7-3) earned the victory pitching all five innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. After allowing a hit in the first inning Bryan then retired the next 14 Bear hitters.

Game 2 Lindsey Wilson 4, Pikeville 0

Whelan put the Blue Raiders on the board first in the second inning with a double to deep left field to score a run. Pikeville began the fourth inning with three consecutive one out singles to load the bases. Destiny Molden bunted a ball right back to pitcher Taylor Slade who was able to fire it home for the force out. Slade was then able to get out of the bases loaded jam with a ground out.

Lindsey Wilson scored a run in the fourth inning and added two more in the sixth. Foukes led off the fourth with a single then reached second on a stolen base. She then advanced to third on a ground out and score after a wild throw to third. Parsons and Kooker each drove in a run in the sixth inning with two outs to increase the lead to 4-0.

Slade (4-2) pitched her fourth shutout of the season pitching all seven innings while allowing five hits.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Monday when they travel to Dayton, Tennessee to take on Bryan (Tenn.) for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
