Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team swept a Mid-South Conference doubleheader on Wednesday 6-1, 4-3 (9 innings) against Cumberland (Tenn.) on Wednesday at the CU Softball Field.
Amy Rogers went a combined 6-for-9 for the Blue Raiders (22-7, 8-0 MSC). Amber Foukes drove in a total of five runs including the go ahead run in the ninth inning of game two.
GAME 1 – Lindsey Wilson 6, Cumberland 1
After a leadoff single and an error the Phoenix had runners on first and second with no outs. After the runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, Casey Bryan then struck out the next two Cumberland batters to end the scoring threat in the first inning.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the second inning. Rogers led off the inning with a single to left field and Samantha Luckett reached second on an error that advanced Rogers to third. Bailey Mize drove in Rogers with a single to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead. Cassie Kooker drove in Luckett to increase the lead to 2-0. Sydney Fourman drew a leadoff walk in the fifth inning and later came around to score on a Luckett double increasing the Blue Raider lead to 3-0.
Lindsey Wilson pushed across three runs in the sixth inning all coming with two outs. Whelan led off the inning with a walk then advanced to second on a stolen base. After a Kooker single, Foukes hit a two-run single to push the Blue Raider lead to 5-0. A Rogers RBI single increased the lead to 6-0.
Shae Dunn got the Phoenix on the board with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning cutting the Lindsey Wilson lead to 6-1. After a strikeout, Taylor Woodring reached on an infield single. Bryan then retired the next two batters recording one strikeout.
Bryan (11-3) pitched her 12th complete game of the season giving up one run on seven hits and striking out seven. Fourman, Rogers and Luckett each recorded two hits.
GAME 2 – Lindsey Wilson 4, Cumberland 3 (9 innings)
Kooker and Pilgrim began the first inning with back-to-back singles. Fourman reached on a fielder's choice and Foukes hit a sacrifice fly scoring Pilgrim to put the Blue Raiders up 1-0. After a Rogers single a fly out ended the inning stranding runners on first and second.
Lindsey Wilson added one run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Kooker began the inning with a walk and Pilgrim got on base with a single. After a ground out advanced the runners to second and third Foukes hit her second sacrifice fly of the game scoring Kooker.
Cumberland tied the game in the fifth inning aided by two Blue Raider errors. Tyra Graham reached first on an error then reached second on a ground out. Courtney Miles reached on an infield single and Graham came around to score on an error to cut the lead to 2-1. Dunn tied things up with an RBI double. The Phoenix took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after a Kassydi Montgomery leadoff home run.
Kooker began the seventh inning reaching on an infield single and then was advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt. Kooker then reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a Fourman sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3.
The Blue Raiders left runners on second and third in the eighth inning. Rogers led off the inning with a single. After a one out walk Whalen reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. A pop up ended the Lindsey Wilson threat.
After two consecutive two out walks in the bottom of the eighth Taylor Slade was able to force a ground out to end the inning.
Pilgrim doubled with one out in the ninth inning and then advanced to third on a fly out. Foukes drove in Pilgrim to give the Blue Raiders a 4-3 lead.
Slade (6-2) picked up the victory pitching four innings of relief while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Rogers recorded a career-high four hits and Foukes drove in three runs.
Montgomery was the lone Cumberland (13-15-1, 1-3 MSC) batter to record multiple hits.
The Blue Raiders are back in action for a four game MSC series against Shawnee State (Ohio) Friday-Saturday. Game one of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at Lindsey Wilson Park.
