Softball sweeps MSC doubleheader against Shawnee State on Friday

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team opened up a four game Mid-South Conference series against Shawnee State (Ohio) with a doubleheader sweep on Friday.

The Blue Raiders (24-7, 10-0 MSC) hit six total home runs on the day. Lindsey Wilson took game one 7-3 outhitting the Bears (12-11, 6-8 MSC) 13-4 and won game two 11-5. The Blue Raiders have now won 13 consecutive games

Game 1 – Lindsey Wilson 7, Shawnee State 3

Shawnee State struck first in the second inning aided by a Lindsey Wilson error. After a fly out Tara Duncan reached second base on an error. Duncan then advanced to third on a ground out then scored on a single into left field to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders scored two runs in the third inning with the help of two Shawnee State errors. After a leadoff single and a hit by pitch, Amber Foukes reached on a single through the hole at shortstop. An error on the play allowed the first Lindsey Wilson run to score to tie the game 1-1. Amy Rogers gave the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead on a single.

Sydney Fourman hit a leadoff home run in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 3-1. Shawnee State tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-run home run hit by Kayla Koch.

Lindsey Wilson scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth on five hits and hit two home runs in the inning. Cassie Kooker and Fourman each hit a solo home run to increase the Blue Raider lead to 5-3. Two more runs would come across in the inning to increase the lead to 7-3.

Casey Bryan (12-3) picked up the victory pitching her 13th complete game while giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out eight. Kooker and Rogers both recorded three hits in the game. Rogers and Fourman each drove in two runs.

Game 2 – Lindsey Wilson 11, Shawnee State 5

After the Bears scored one run in the top of the first Lindsey Wilson responded by scoring four in the bottom half of the inning on two home runs. Foukes hit a three-run home run to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead. A Samantha Luckett solo home run increased the lead to 4-1.

Foukes hit her second three-run home run of the game in the second inning to give Lindsey Wilson a 7-1 lead. A leadoff home run and a sacrifice bunt by Shawnee State in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to 7-3. Shawnee State added a run in the fifth trimming the lead to 7-4.

The Blue Raiders scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kooker and Callum Pilgrim both scored on wild pitches in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 9-3. Mize and Megan Terrell scored in the fifth inning giving Lindsey Wilson an 11-4 lead.

Ashtyn Saunders led off the sixth inning with an infield single and came around to score on a Koch single to trim the deficit to 11-5.

Taylor Slade (7-2) picked up the win pitching four innings of relief giving up two earned runs. Foukes recorded a career-high six RBIs in the victory.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. CT at Lindsey Wilson Park.
