BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team opened up the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament with a 3-1 victory against fourth-seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
The Blue Raiders (38-9) outhit the Bears (24-23) 10-2. Cassie Kooker recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Sydney Fourman and Amber Foukes also recorded two hits.
Lindsey Wilson faces No. 6 seed Cumberlands (Ky.) in the winners bracket final on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the second inning scoring two runs with two outs. After back-to-back singles by Abby Whelan and Lauren Lett, Kooker hit a two-run double to deep left field to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 lead.
Katie Wolsefer got the Bears on the board in third inning with a solo home run to trim the lead to 2-1. Prior to the Wolsefer home run, Casey Bryan had retired the first six batters recording four strikeouts.
Lindsey Wilson had runners on first and second with one out in the third inning but two-straight fly outs ended the Blue Raider threat. The Bears had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan struck out the remaining two batters to end the Shawnee State scoring threat.
After Kooker ledoff the fourth inning with a single, Fourman drove in Kooker to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1. After an error and a walk put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh with two outs, Bryan recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Bryan (22-4) recorded her 20th complete game of the season allowing one run on two hits and striking out 12 matching a career-high.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday against Cumberlands in the winners bracket final at 1:30 p.m. CT at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
