Softball falls in Mid-South Conference Championship game, 2-1 to Cumberlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball outhit sixth-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) but stranded 11 runners in a 2-1 loss today in the 2017 Mid-South Conference Tournament at Michael O. Buchanan Park.

Despite the loss, Lindsey Wilson (39-11) has already punched its ticket into the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. The Blue Raiders are one of 10 host institutions to already have received a bid into the national championship.

Cumberlands (19-32) earns the MSC's automatic bid into the national tournament based on its conference tournament title.

Throughout the game, the Blue Raiders put themselves in a position to score but failed each time until the top of the seventh. Lindsey Wilson put six runners in scoring position -- either on second or third base -- during the game, but was 0-for-8 at the plate with opportunities to drive home the runs.

Cumberlands grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Kaylee Janes singled and Katie Baldock walked to open the game at the plate for the Patriots. After a sacrifice to move the runners to second and third, MSC Pitcher of the Year Casey Bryan forced a ground out to inch within an out of escaping the early jam.

Madison Monnin denied the Bryan escape by driving home Janes with a single back up the middle to put the Patriots up 1-0. Baldock tried to score on the Monnin hit but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Lindsey Wilson -- who managed to put runners on base in every inning -- threatened in the second and fourth innings to tie the game. Each time, the Blue Raiders had multiple baserunners only to be turned away by what would ultimately be a trio of Patriot hurlers.

Amy Rogers' one-out single in the fourth followed by a double from Bailey Mize put Blue Raider runners at second and third. Unfortunately for Lindsey Wilson, a ground out and a pop out ended the inning without a run.

Cumberlands' Amber Mainord provided some insurance in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Patriots. Mainord doubled with one out and scored two batters later on a Lindsey Wilson throwing error to add the all-important second run.

The Blue Raiders once again had two baserunners aboard in the sixth inning only to come away empty.

Lindsey Wilson finally pushed a run across in the seventh inning.

Sydney Fourman drew a one-out walk and was lifted for a pinch runner. After Amber Foukes hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, Samantha Luckett tripled to deep right-center field to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But in what ultimately was the theme of the game, Luckett was stranded on a ground-ball out to give the Patriots to the tournament title.

Bryan (22-6) suffered the complete-game loss while allowing two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits over six innings. She struck out a pair of Patriots.

Aryanna Cannoy picked up the win in relief while Taryn Sigl registered the save. Cannoy pitched one inning in relief of starter Sydney Maynard, while Sigl pitched the final 2-2/3, allowing one run on three hits.

The NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round begins on Monday, May 15 at various sites across the NAIA. The national tournament field and pairings are scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, May 10.
