No. 9 Softball sweeps weekend series against Cumberlands with two wins on Saturday, 8-7 and 7-4

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team completed a four game Mid-South Conference sweep of Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (30-7, 16-0 MSC) have won 19 consecutive games. Lindsey Wilson took game one 8-7 on a Callum Pilgrim walk-off single. The Blue Raiders took game two 7-4.

GAME 1 – Lindsey Wilson 8, Cumberlands 7

Hannah Stephenson put the Patriots (13-27, 5-15 MSC) on the board first in the first inning with an RBI single that scored Katie Baldock. Ciara England stole home on a double steal to give Cumberlands a 2-0 lead. Stephenson reached base on an error in the fourth inning and came around to score on a Kailin Yantz single to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Blue Raiders would push across three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up. Lindsey Wilson had the bases loaded with no outs after Amber Foukes drew a walk, Amy Rogers singled and Samantha Luckett reached on a dropped fly ball. Foukes scored on a Bailey Mize fielder's choice to cut the lead to 3-1. Rogers and Mize both scored on bases loaded walks to tie the game 3-3.

The Patriots loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning reaching on three consecutive bunts. Kaylee James stole home on a double steal to give Cumberlands a 4-3 lead. The Patriots added another run in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Foukes hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to trim the deficit to 5-4. Lauren Lett hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game 5-5. Cumberlands regained the lead in the sixth inning scoring two runs to take a 7-5 lead. Luckett hit an RBI single in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.

Abby Whelan was walked to begin the seventh inning and reached second on a bunt single by Lett. Cassie Kooker reached on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher who was unable to get the out at third that loaded the bases with no outs. Pilgrim drove in two runs on a single to right field to give the Blue Raiders the 8-7 victory.

Casey Bryan who started the game left in the fifth inning and returned in the seventh to pick up the victory and is now 16-3 on the season. Bryan gave up four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

GAME 2 – Lindsey Wilson 7, Cumberlands 4

After back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out for the Patriots, Elisa Mauldin recorded an RBI single to give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead. Samantha Payne singled to drive in a run to make it 2-0. The Patriots added one in the third inning to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Blue Raider bats would come alive in the fourth inning scoring six runs on five hits. Kooker recorded the first hit for the Blue Raiders with a leadoff single. After a Pilgrim double and Sydney Fourman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs, Foukes drove in two with a double to left field to trim the lead to 3-2. Luckett drove in Fourman to tie the game at 3-3.

Foukes scored on a wild pitch to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 lead. Bailey Mize drove in two runs with a double to deep-left center field to increase the Blue Raider lead to 6-3. The Blue Raiders added one in the sixth to make it 7-3. Cumberlands added one in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Lett (7-2) earned the victory pitching her fifth complete game of the season. She gave up two earned runs while allowing two hits.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Monday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park for a MSC doubleheader against Cumberland (Tenn.) beginning at 3 p.m.
