Softball opens up MSC play with doubleheader sweep of Georgetown Friday

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team opened Mid-South Conference play with a doubleheader sweep against Georgetown (Ky.) Friday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (21-4) took game one from the Tigers (14-7) 3-1 and won game two 9-6. With the sweep, Lindsey Wilson extends its season-high winning streak to 11 games.

Game 1: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 3, Georgetown 1

After five-and-a-half scoreless innings, Lindsey Wilson struck first in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs all with two outs. After a lineout, Alaeni Ray reached on a walk and Sydney Fourman reached on a fielder's choice. A fielder's choice put runners on first and second with two outs when Cassie Matlock singled to load the bases. Lyric Houston drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Blue Raiders up 1-0. Kelsie Cornelius doubled to left field giving Lindsey Wilson a 3-1 lead.

Corrin Robinson led off the Georgetown seventh inning with a walk. Katie Young reached on a bunt that allowed Robinson to advance to second. Robinson then advanced to third on the play on an error. Chaselyn Allgeier hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Blue Raider lead to 3-1. Annabelle Ramirez then retired the next two Tiger batters to secure the 3-1 victory.

Ramirez picked up her fifth win of the season with the complete game. She allowed five hits with one run that was unearned with three walks and striking out four. Five different Blue Raiders recorded a hit in the game. Cornelius drove in two runs while Houston had one RBI.

Game 2: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 9, Georgetown 6

Ray gave Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a single that scored Callum Pilgrim. Amber Hancock increased the lead in the first with a three-run home run on a 3-2 count to increase the lead to 4-0. Ray increased the Blue Raider lead to 5-0 in the second inning with an RBI double.

Samantha Luckett reached on a bunt single that scored a run in the third inning to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 6-0. Pilgrim recorded an RBI single giving the Blue Raiders a 7-0 lead. Kara Howard got Georgetown on the board in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run. Robinson hit an RBI single to trim the deficit to 7-2. Lindsey Wilson increased its lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Houston drove in a pair of runs. Georgetown added a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth inning cutting the Blue Raider lead to 9-6.

Ramirez retired the Tigers in order in the top of the seventh securing the victory. Lauren Lett picked up her third win of the season pitching 4-1/3 innings allowing four runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Abby Whelan and Ramirez each pitched 1-1/3 innings of relief. Ray led the way for Lindsey Wilson with three hits and also drove in a pair of runs. Hancock had three RBIs while Houston recorded two.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on March 29 when they travel to Cumberlands (Ky.) for a MSC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
