Box Score 2 WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday at the UC Softball Complex.
The 11th-ranked Blue Raiders (24-5, 5-1 MSC) saw their 13-game win streak snapped after a late-game rally fell short in the opener 3-2, but Lindsey Wilson bounced back with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap thanks to a strong pitching performance from Lauren Lett.
Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 2 Cumberlands 3
Lindsey Wilson attempted to rally from a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh in the opener, but the Blue Raiders ultimately came up short as the tying run was left stranded on third base in the loss.
The Patriots (9-17, 4-4 MSC) took the early lead in the bottom of the first after a two-run home run. Cumberlands tacked on another run in the bottom of the second after a pair of leadoff walks helped lead to an RBI single.
Lindsey Wilson answered with its first run of the contest in the top of the third. After Callum Pilgrim reached on a two-out walk and stole second base, Alaeni Ray chased her home with an RBI single, one of two hits in the game prior to the seventh inning for the Blue Raiders to make it 3-1.
Lindsey Wilson's Annabelle Ramirez and Cumberlands' Sydney Pennycuff kept the game scoreless over the next three innings as the duo battled each other in the pitching circle. Neither hurler faced more than five batters in an inning from the bottom of the third through the bottom of the sixth, combining to face the minimum three times.
The late LWC rally came in the top of the seventh when Amber Hancock started the frame with a leadoff double. Lyric Houston followed with a one-out single as Hancock moved to third, Houston later taking second on a stolen base. Kelsie Cornelius provided a pinch hit RBI groundout to score Hancock and move Houston to third base, but that's where Houston would remain as a groundout ended the contest.
Ramirez (7-3) allowed all three earned runs on just three hits, striking out three but surrendering five free passes. Ray finished with two hits in the loss.
Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 5 Cumberlands 1
The Blue Raiders dented the scoreboard early in the second contest and got a strong performance from Lett in the circle to close out the series with a win.
Lindsey Wilson scored three runs right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. Pilgrim and Ray started the game with back-to-back singles followed by a Kalli Harris double to score Pilgrim. Ray scored on an RBI groundout by Hancock and Cornelius chased home Harris with a two-out single to make it 3-0.
Meanwhile, Lett was perfect through the first three innings retiring the first nine batters she faced before a leadoff walk in the fourth. She then retired the side to remain hitless through four.
The Blue Raiders tacked on two more in the top of the fifth inning. Harris reached on a bunt single and later scored all the way from first on a costly two-out error by the Patriots. Cornelius then tallied her second two-out RBI single to score Hancock for the 5-0 lead.
Cumberlands finally got to Lett in the bottom half of the fifth with their first two hits of the contest, scoring one run with an infield single with the bases loaded. But Lett prevented any more damage as she got a fly out to get out of the bases-loaded jam.
From there Lett went back to being untouchable as she retired the final six batters in order in the sixth and seventh to pick up the win and improve to 4-0 on the year. Cornelius and Harris both had two hits in the victory.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action April 4 as the Blue Raiders host Cincinnati Christian in a doubleheader at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
