Softball picks up wins against Avila and Columbia on final day of Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team closed out the Gulf Coast Invitational on Sunday picking up two wins in the consolation bracket.

The Blue Raiders (7-1) started the day with a 6-0 victory against Avila. Lindsey Wilson closed out the GCI with a 3-1 victory over No. 2-ranked Columbia (Mo.).

Game 1: No. 8 Lindsey Wilson 6, Avila 0

Cassie Matlock led off the second inning with a single. Kelsie Cornelius then hit a two-run home run to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. Abby Whelan began the game retiring the first 11 batters she faced before the Eagles (13-6) got its first hit in the fourth inning.

Amber Hancock increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning with a lead off solo home run. After a groundout, Cassie Kooker hit the second home run of the inning for the Blue Raiders to push their lead to 4-0. After a Callum Pilgrim single, Kalli Harris increased the lead to 5-0 with an RBI double. Sydney Fourman added the final run of the inning when she drove in Harris to put Lindsey Wilson in front 6-0.

After giving up a hit in the fourth, Whelan then retired the next eight Avila batters she faced. The Eagles then loaded the bases with three-consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh. A pair of force outs ended the Avila threat as Lindsey Wilson came away with the 6-0 victory.

Whelan picked up the victory pitching all seven innings allowing four hits while not issuing a free pass. Harris, Cornelius and Kooker all recorded a pair of hits while Pilgrim and Harris each stole a base.

Game 2: No. 8 Lindsey Wilson 3, No. 2 Columbia 1

The Blue Raiders scored two runs in the second inning aided by two Cougar (4-3) errors. Fourman began the inning with a hit by pitch then Cornelius reached first on an error by the shortstop. After Hancock grounded into a 5-3 double play, Amy Rogers reached base on an error by the centerfielder which allowed Cornelius to score. Rogers then came around to score on Kooker single which gave Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 lead.

After back-to-back flyouts to begin the bottom of the second, Karli Leeper hit a solo home run to trim the Blue Raider lead to 2-1. Pilgrim extend the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1 when she drove in Kooker with an RBI single.

Taylor Slade retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced as the Blue Raiders picked up the 3-1 victory. Slade pitched all seven innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three. Pilgrim recorded two hits in the game with a stolen base.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Friday when the face Lawrence Tech (Mich.) to open up the NFCA Tournament in Columbus, Georgia at 9 a.m. CT.
