Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team was swept in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader on Tuesday by Cumberland (Tenn.) at the CU Softball Field.
The Blue Raiders (29-8, 9-3 MSC) dropped game one 10-7 and fell 5-1 in game number two. Cumberland (28-13, 6-8 MSC) totaled 22 hits on the day as Lindsey Wilson recorded 18 over the two games.
Game 1: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 7, Cumberland 10
Callum Pilgrim led off the game reaching on an error by the Phoenix second baseman. After an Alaeni Ray single, Sydney Fourman gave the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead on a single to right field scoring Pilgrim and Ray. Brigid Antonelli gave Cumberland a 3-2 lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Courtney Miles hit a solo home run to increase the Phoenix lead to 4-2 and Paola Del Valle hit an RBI single increasing the lead to 5-2.
Cumberland began the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles. After an error loaded the bases, the Phoenix increased their lead to 6-2 on a fielder's choice. Miles then drove in two on a single up the middle pushing the Cumberland lead to 8-2.
Pilgrim led off the top of the third with a double and then advanced to third on a Ray single. Pilgrim would then come around to score when Fourman reached on a fielder's choice to trim the lead to 8-3. Cumberland scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase its lead to 10-3.
Fourman trimmed the deficit to 10-4 with a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Amber Hancock reached on a single and after back-to-back fly outs moved to third on a Kelsie Cornelius single. Cassie Kooker drove in Hancock to make it 10-5. Pilgrim cut the lead to 10-7 with a two RBI double to left field.
Six Blue Raiders recorded two hits in the game. Fourman had two hits with a team-high four RBIs. Pilgrim also had two hits with two RBIs and Kooker recorded two hits while driving in a run.
Game 2: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 1, Cumberland 5
Tyra Graham hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Cumberland loaded the bases in the third inning with no outs after a pair of singles and a hit by pitch. Lindsey Wilson got the first out of the inning on a fly out however, a run would come into score on a throwing error by the Blue Raider right fielder. A sacrifice bunt increased the Cumberland lead to 3-0 and a RBI single made it 4-0.
Lyric Houston led off the fifth inning with a walk. After a fly out and a pop out, Pilgrim singled to advance Houston to second. The Blue Raiders then had bases loaded after Ray was walked before a fielder's choice ended the Lindsey Wilson scoring threat.
Cumberland increased its lead to 5-0 in the sixth on a RBI double from Taylor Woodring. Pilgrim got the Blue Raiders on the board with a home run in the top of the seventh that cut the lead to 5-1. Ray then singled before the next two batters were retired as the Phoenix secured the 5-1 victory.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Friday when they travel to Shawnee State (Ohio) for a MSC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
