Softball splits doubleheader at Shawnee State on Friday

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader with Shawnee State (Ohio) Friday at Boone Coleman Field.

The Blue Raiders (30-9, 10-4 MSC) dropped game one to the Bears (20-14, 7-9 MSC) 6-5 and picked up a 6-0 victory in game two. Lindsey Wilson recorded 18 hits over the two games as Shawnee State had 14.

Game 1: No. 9 Lindsey Wilson 5, Shawnee State 6

The Blue Raiders had runners on second and third with nobody out in the second inning and were unable to capitalize. Sydney Fourman led off the inning with a single then advanced to second on an Amber Hancock single. On the same play, an error by the Bear right fielder allowed Fourman to advance to third and Hancock to move to second. Shawnee State retired the next three batters ending the Blue Raider scoring threat.

Stacey Trenholm led off the bottom of the second with a first-pitch home run to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. After back-to-back singles, a sacrifice bunt moved Shawnee State runners to second and third. The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 on a Maureen Wolansky RBI. Shawnee State would scored two more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Cassie Kooker began the Lindsey Wilson third reaching on an error by the Bear third baseman. Callum Pilgrim drove in Kooker with a single to right field to cut the deficit to 4-1. Pilgrim advanced to second on a stolen base and came around to score on a Fourman double to cut the Shawnee State lead to 4-2.

The Blue Raiders added a run in the sixth inning aided by two Bear errors. Cassie Matlock reached first on a missed catch by the second baseman and Lyric Houston reached on a misplayed grounder by the catcher that allowed Matlock to advance to third. Kooker then drove in Matlock to make it a 4-3 game.

A single and a walk to begin the seventh inning for Lindsey Wilson put runners on first and second. After a flyout, Matlock hit a triple scoring both runs to give the Blue Raiders their first lead of the game at 5-4.

After a walk and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for Shawnee State with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Following a strikeout, Kayla Koch hit a walk-off double to give the Bears a 6-5 victory.

Fourman led the way with a pair of hits for the Blue Raiders as Matlock drove in a team-high two runs.

Game 2 : No. 9 Lindsey Wilson 6, Shawnee State 0

Alaeni Ray reached with a one-out single in the top of the first then advanced to third on a Kalli Harris double. Ray scored on a Fourman sacrifice fly to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead. Three consecutive one-out singles by Ray, Harris and Fourman loaded the bases for the Blue Raiders in the third. Hancock then drove in a pair of runs on a single increasing the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-0.

Following back-to-back outs to begin the fourth, Pilgrim was hit by a pitch then was able to advance to third on consecutive passed balls. Ray hit a double to increase the Blue Raider lead to 4-0. Harris then doubled scoring Ray to give Lindsey Wilson a 5-0 lead. Matlock drove in a run in the seventh to give the Blue Raiders a 6-0 lead.

Taylor Slade improved to 3-2 on the season pitching four innings allowing five hits with a walk while striking out two. Annabelle Ramirez picked up her third save of the season pitching three innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Ray and Harris each had three hits in the game and drove in a run apiece. Hancock recorded two hits with two RBIs.

The two teams close out the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 8 a.m. CT at Boone Coleman Field.
