Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split the final two games of a four-game Mid-South Conference series at Shawnee State (Ohio) Saturday.
After splitting a doubleheader yesterday, the Blue Raiders (31-10, 11-5 MSC) took game one 4-0 and dropped game two 6-5. Lindsey Wilson had 15 total hits on the day as Shawnee State (21-15, 8-10 MSC) recorded 13.
Game 1: No. 9 Lindsey Wilson 4, Shawnee State 0
After back-to-back outs in the top of the third, Lindsey Wilson had runners on second and third but a pop out ended the Lindsey Wilson scoring chance. The Blue Raiders would again strand a pair of runners in the fourth and fifth inning.
Lyric Houston led off the top of the seventh reaching on an infield single. Amy Rogers then reached on an error by the Bear third baseman which allowed Houston to advance to third. Cassie Kooker also reached on an error by the Shawnee State third baseman which loaded the bases for Lindsey Wilson. Callum Pilgrim hit a bases-clearing double to deep left field to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. Alaeni Ray then drove in Pilgrim to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 4-0.
A one-out hit by pitch and a Lindsey Wilson error put runners on first and second for Shawnee State in the bottom of the seventh inning. Annabelle Ramirez then struck out the next two Bear hitters to secure the 4-0 victory.
Ramirez improved to 9-5 on the season with the complete game shutout. She pitched all seven innings allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out five. Ramirez began the game retiring 13 of the first 15 batters she faced.
Pilgrim led the way for the Blue Raiders recording three hits in four at bats and driving in three runs.
Game 2: No. 9 Lindsey Wilson 5, Shawnee State 6
Michael Cunningham led off the bottom of the first for the Bears with a solo homerun on a 1-0 count. Ashtyn Saunders then singled then advanced to second on a groundout. Kayla Koch doubled scoring Saunders to increase the Shawnee State lead to 2-0.
The Bears began the bottom of the second with two singles and a hit by pitch that loaded the bases with nobody out. Maureen Wolansky drove in a run with a single to put the Bears up 3-0. Cunningham then made it 4-0 with a single to shallow right field.
Lindsey Wilson scored two runs in the top of the third both coming with two outs. After a groundout and a pop out, back-to-back singles by Pilgrim and Ray put runners on first and third. Kalli Harris doubled to deep left field scoring both runners and trimming the deficit to 4-2. Shawnee State added a run in the bottom half of the third to increase the lead to 5-2.
Houston reached on a two-out error by the Shawnee State left fielder in the sixth inning and scored on an Amber Hancock single to cut the lead to 5-3. Three consecutive singles by Lindsey Wilson to begin the seventh loaded the bases. A Harris groundout scored a run trimming the Bears lead to 5-4. Fourman then tied the game at 5-5 on a groundout that scored Pilgrim.
Koch hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ramirez was able to retire the next two Shawnee State hitters before Haley Rawlins hit a walk-off single into left field to give the Bears the 6-5 victory.
Pilgrim and Ray each recorded two hits in the game while Harris drove in three runs.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Wednesday when they host Cumberland (Tenn.) for a MSC doubleheader at 2 p.m. CT at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
