Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader on Saturday against No. 4 Campbellsville (Ky.) at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
The Blue Raiders (36-11, 16-6 MSC) fell in game one 8-0 in five innings and picked up a 5-3 victory in game two. Cassie Matlock had four hits in five at bats over the two games. Campbellsville (40-7, 22-4 MSC) outhit Lindsey Wilson in the doubleheader 19-10.
Game 1: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 0 , No. 4 Campbellsville 8 (5 innings)
Taylor Slade got into trouble in the first inning but was able to work around the jam to prevent Campbellsville from scoring. Jacqueline Roof reached on a single to first base then Rebecca Miller reached on a fielder's choice. Tori Humphrey doubled to deep-right center field to put runners on second and third. Slade then retired the next two batters with a strikeout and a groundout to end the early Tiger scoring chance.
The Tigers began the second inning with back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, Ryleigh Oldham singled to shallow right field to load the bases. Roof hit a double scoring two runs to give Campbellsville a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt increase the Tiger lead to 3-0 and Humphrey singled to shallow left field adding another run. A double to deep center field increased the Campbellsville lead to 5-0. Miller increased the Tiger lead to 6-0 with an RBI-double in the fourth inning.
Campbellsville added two runs in the fifth both coming with two out. After the first two Tiger batters were retired, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second. A double to deep right-center put the Tigers up 8-0. Lindsey Wilson was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth causing the run rule to be enforced.
Taylor Slade fell to 5-3 on the season pitching 3-1/3 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Abby Whelan pitched 1-2/3 innings of relief giving up two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Game 2: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 5, No. 4 Campbellsville 3
After a groundout to begin the bottom of the first, Lyric Houston reached first on a walk. Alaeni Ray then hit her third home run of the season on a 1-0 count to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 lead. Ryley Whitney began the top of the second for Campbellsville with a single to center field. Brianna Scott bunted and reached on an error by the Blue Raider first baseman. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, a sacrifice fly cut the Blue Raider lead to 2-1. A double and a single gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Houston led off the bottom of the third reaching on a walk. Ray hit a double to deep left field scoring Houston to tie the game at 3-3. Jordan Ison began the top of the fourth reaching on an error by the Blue Raider shortstop and reach second on a passed ball. Ison then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Oldham put down a bunt that went back to Annabelle Ramirez, Ramirez then threw it home where Amy Rogers was able to tag out Ison to keep the game tied at 3-3.
Amber Hancock led off the bottom of the sixth reaching on a walk and advanced to second on a Rogers sacrifice bunt. After a groundout, Callum Pilgrim reached on an infield single before Houston singled into center field scoring Hancock and giving the Blue Raiders a 4-3 lead. Houston stole second and on throw a missed catch by the Tiger shortstop allowed Pilgrim to score and increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 5-3.
Ramirez threw her 15th complete game of the season and improved to 12-6 with the victory. She gave up three runs all which were unearned on six hits while striking out six while not allowing a walk.
The two teams close out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
