Box Score 2 LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- No. 8 Lindsey Wilson softball and fourth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett split a doubleheader today at Grizzly Softball Complex.
The top-10 battle proved to be a pair of blowouts with the Blue Raiders (13-1) winning the opener 8-0 and dropping the nightcap 9-1 to the Grizzlies (24-6) in five innings. The second-game loss is the first setback of the season for the Blue Raiders.
GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 8 Georgia Gwinnett 0
Annabelle Ramirez continued her strong start to the season with a complete-game shutout in Lindsey Wilson's 8-0 win over the Grizzlies.
Ramirez surrendered just two hits while striking out 10 en route to improving to 3-0 on the season.
Kalli Harris gave the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Callum Pilgrim, who reached on an error to lead off the game. Lyric Houston added to the Lindsey Wilson lead in the third inning with a two-out, two-run single to give the Blue Raiders the 3-0 lead. Houston finished the game 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs.
Makea-Al Kaluau -- who scored twice in the game -- chased home Cassie Matlock in the fifth inning to give the Blue Raiders the 4-0 lead. Matlock joined Houston with two hits in the game while scoring three times.
Lindsey Wilson finished the game out-hitting the Grizzlies 9-2.
The Blue Raiders tacked on a run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to push the lead to 8-0.
Jaydee Boursaw hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season in the sixth inning. She leads the Mid-South Conference and ranks second in the NAIA in homers this season. Lindsey Wilson capped the scoring in the seventh with another Houston RBI and a run off a double play and finally on a wild pitch.
The win matches the best start to a season for the Blue Raiders with their 13th straight win to begin a season.
GAME 2: Lindsey Wilson 1 Georgia Gwinnett 9
Georgia Gwinnett broke open a tight game in the bottom of the fifth inning with seven runs to end the game in run-rule fashion 9-1.
The Grizzlies scored for the first time today with a two-run home run in the second inning.
Pilgrim -- who provided a two-out double in the third -- scored on Zakiya Sizemore's single to cut the Georgia Gwinnett lead in half.
The game remained 2-1 -- despite the Blue Raiders stranding five runners in the first five innings -- until the fateful bottom of the fifth.
Taylor Slade came on in relief in the fourth inning and got the Blue Raiders out of a jam. However, the Grizzlies scored five times off Slade and two more runs off Abby Whelan in the fifth to cap the win. Starter Hannah Epperson suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over 3-1/3 innings. She slips to 4-1 on the season.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action Noon CT on Sunday, March 17, as the Blue Raiders travel to Reinhardt (Ga.) in Waleska, Ga.
