Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky.- The Lindsey Wilson softball sweeps Cumberlands (Ky.) 12-3 and 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
The Blue Raiders (17-1, 2-0 MSC) strong hitting helped propel Lindsey Wilson over Cumberlands through the first two games of the four-game series. Makea-Al Kaluau led the offense going 5-of-6 with two home-runs and eight RBIs.
GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 12 | Cumberlands 3
Callum Pilgrim led it off for the Blue Raiders hitting a single, then stealing a base to advance to second. An overthrown ball allowed for Pilgrim to take third, giving the Blue Raiders a runner in scoring position. After a strikeout by Lindsey Wilson, Jaydee Boursaw drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the second inning, Kaluau singled out to left field giving the Blue Raiders a runner on first. After suffering another out, Breanna Clark hit a deep double to right center field to bring in another run for Lindsey Wilson.
An unfortunate error and a wild pitch would lead to another run for giving Lindsey Wilson a 3-0 advantage.
The Blue Raider extended their lead further in the third inning after Cumberlands loaded the bases. Kaluau stepped up to the plate and smacked a grand slam home run into deep center field.
Cumberlands batting was held in check through four innings, until the top of the fifth when the Patriots scored two runs off a Hannah Stephenson two run-shot over the right field fence, cutting Lindsey Wilson's lead to 7-2.
The Blue Raiders responded scoring five more runs in the final two innings to win the game via run rule. Kaluau drove in the final runs for the Blue Raiders, hitting her second home-run of the game with a three-run shot just over the right-field fence.
Kaluau led the Blue Raiders batting 4-of-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs in game one. Hannah Epperson earned her sixth win going five and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts while walking one and giving up three runs.
Game 2- Lindsey Wilson 6 | Cumberlands 2
Lindsey would score first in the second contest of the day after they struck in in the first inning of action. After a Zakiya Sizemore walk, Jaydee Boursaw stepped up with a single to center field giving base runners for Lindsey Wilson. After a bobbled ball by Cumberlands, which allowed runners to advance to second and third, Kalli Harris hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field to give a quick 1-0 advantage.
Both teams kept each other in check through the next three innings of action. The Patriots offense broke out a two-run inning in the top of fifth to give Cumberlands its first lead of the day.
After a quick out by Lindsey Wilson, Madison Huber stepped for the Patriots with a single to left field. On the next pitch, Tori Malone gave the Patriots the lead with the two-run home run deep to left field.
Down 2-1 heading in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Blue Raiders responded with a three-run inning to reclaim the lead. Pilgrim and Sizemore got on base for Lindsey Wilson with two singles to center field. Boursaw drove in the first run with a deep double to center field to tie the game.
The Patriots walked the next batter to load the bases for Lindsey Wilson. A quick out by the Patriots put Kaluau up to the plate, who drove in another run off a single to left field. Kalli Harris capped the inning off with a sacrifice fly giving the Blue Raiders a 4-2 victory advantage.
Lindsey Wilson closed out the next two innings, driving in two more runs to seal a 6-2 victory. The two runs for the Blue Raiders came off a Kalli Harris double sixth inning.
Harris led the Blue Raider offense going 1-of-2 with three RBI's in the second matchup of the day. Pilgrim chipped in batting 2-of-4 with two runs, while Sizemore added a 2-of-3 hitting performance with three runs.
Annabelle Ramirez earns her fifth win of the year pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts while giving up two runs.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Marilyn D. Sparks Park where they will finish off the weekend series with Cumberlands.
