Softball splits doubleheader; take weekend series 3-1 against Shawnee State

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split their Saturday doubleheader against Shawnee State as they won 12-4 in game one and would fall in game two 3-2 at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (34-2, 15-1 MSC) would take the weekend series 3-1 after sweeping Friday's doubleheader. The loss today snapped a 21 game win streak for the Blue Raiders, as their only other loss on the season game against Georgia Gwinnett.

Game 1 (6 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 12 | Shawnee State 4

Amber Hancock led the charge with three hits in the game as Callum Pilgrim, Zakiya Sizemore, Lauren Lett and Samantha Luckett all produced two of their own. Taylor Slade (8-0) went the distance in the circle, pitching six innings while allowing six hits and striking out three batters.

Lindsey Wilson quickly took the lead in the game as they scored two runs in the first. Pilgrim opened the game reaching on an error and would steal second to advance into scoring position. Jaydee Boursaw would single to drive home Pilgrim. Kalli Harris would double during the next at-bat to score Boursaw.

The Blue Raiders tacked on six more runs in the second inning as they managed five hits. Lett, Luckett and Hancock would all single to lead off the inning, loading the bases. Pilgrim would drive in two runs with a single to center.

Sizemore would then reach on a walk to once again load the bases. A walk would score Pilgrim before Cassie Matlock grounded out, but the play scored Sizemore.

Makea Al Kaluau would single to center to score Boursaw and Lett for the final runs of the inning, increasing the LWC advantage to 8-0.

Lindsey Wilson had another productive inning in the third as they managed three runs on four hits, Luckett led off the inning with a solo home run.

With one out in the inning, Pilgrim would double to right center field. The double makes her the programs all-time leader in doubles with 56 for her career.

Sizemore then hit a two-run home run as the Blue Raiders would lead 11-0.

Shawnee State (18-13, 5-11 MSC) would push two runs across the plate in both the fourth and fifth innings but the Blue Raiders would close out the game in the sixth on a run-rule when Hancock singled to drive in Lett.

Game 2 (7 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 2 | Shawnee State 3

Shawnee State would outhit the Blue Raiders in game two 8-7 as they would do just enough to pull out a 3-2 victory, handing LWC their first loss in conference play.

After 4-1/2 scoreless innings, the Blue Raiders would score the first run of the game on a Luckett solo home run.

Shawnee State would respond with two runs in the sixth inning as Marisa Brown hit a two-run home run. LWC quickly tied the game at two in the home half of the inning when Lett singled and scored Harris who reached base earlier in the inning on a standup double.

The Bears would score the game-winning run in the seventh inning to defeat the Blue Raiders.

Paige Oldham (10-5) picked up the win for Shawnee State pitching seven innings and striking out four batters. Abby Whelan (4-1) pitched 6-2/3 innings allowing eight hits and recording three strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Tuesday when they take on WVU Tech at 1 p.m. CT at Sparks Park.
