Box Score 2 BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. -- Fifth-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball proved today it can win a variety of ways, picking up two wins to open the 2020 season.
Lindsey Wilson (2-0) beat host Blue Mountain (Miss.) 18-5 in five innings in today's opener and closed with a 1-0 win over Brescia (Ky.) in a neutral-site game to close out the day.
GAME 1
Makea-Al Kaluau powered the Blue Raiders today's opener with three home runs and nine RBIs in the 18-5 win over Blue Mountain. Kaluau finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate while adding four runs scored.
Kaluau was one of six Blue Raiders with multiple hits in the win.
Jaydee Boursaw, Breanna Clark, Abby Whelan, Sam Sims, and Desiree Chang all provided two hits in the game. Boursaw, Clark, Chang, and Lyric Houston all drove home two runs in the win.
Lindsey Wilson scored nine runs in the opening inning and never looked back. Kaluau hit two homers in the inning -- a two-run shot and a grand slam.
Lindsey Wilson added five runs in the third and four more in the fifth to end the game in five innings.
Annabelle Ramirez picked up the five-inning, complete-game win. She allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out five.
GAME 2
Runs were more difficult to come by in the nightcap as Hannah Epperson hurled a complete-game shutout in the 1-0 win over Brescia.
Epperson scattered four hits while striking out six Bearcats in the win.
After collecting 14 hits in the opener, the Lindsey Wilson offense managed just three in the finale. Ultimately a bases-loaded walk proved to be the difference in the game. Zakiya Sizemore drew the walk in the fourth inning to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Epperson made the run stand including retiring 12 of the last 14 batters she faced.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Saturday, facing Brescia at 1 p.m. CT and Blue Mountain at 3 p.m. CT.
