Box Score 2 BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team picked up a pair of victories over Union (Ky.) on Sunday at Union Field in Barbourville, Kentucky.
Through the two games, Lindsey Wilson produced 20 hits from the plate while allowing just nine to the Bulldogs.
Game one (five innings): Lindsey Wilson 14 | Union 2
The Blue Raiders dominated game one of the doubleheader with a combination of strong bats and consistent pitching.
Annabelle Ramirez earned the win and corralled an impressive showing from the circle, pitching four hitless innings of work while walking two and striking out six. Payten Gregory replaced Ramirez to close out the game.
From the plate, four different Blue Raiders recorded at least one RBI. Makea-Al Kaluau led the way with five, while Lyric Houston (four), Mikayla Marquez (three), and Alexus Garza (one) trailed right behind.
LWC led 1-0 after one inning of play thanks to a Kaluau sacrifice fly. The small lead was followed up by the floodgates completely opening in the second inning as Lindsey Wilson poured in seven runs to take easy control of the game. Kaluau, Houston, and Marquez each chipped in two RBIs apiece in the inning.
Leading 8-0, the Blue Raiders crossed two more runs in the third inning after Houston launched a two-run home run over the left-field fence.
Now up double-digits in the fourth inning, LWC kept the runs coming as Garza singled to deep right-center field to score Lexi Isable from second base.
Lindsey Wilson closed out the game strong, garnering three more runs in the final inning of action off an error and a pair of RBIs from Kaluau and Marquez. Union successfully scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to avoid being shutout.
Game two (eight innings): Lindsey Wilson 5 | Union 3
Game two at Union Field was much different from the first, as neither team was able to gain the upper hand until extra innings.
Despite a sluggish first game, it was Union who garnered the opening lead in the first inning off an error. This lead was short-lived however, as Lindsey Wilson notched a run of its own in the second inning off a Bulldogs error.
Not to be denied, Union brought together two more runs in the third inning to regain the advantage at 3-1. Again, it was a short-lived lead as the Blue Raiders tied things back up in the fourth inning after Houston sent out an RBI double and eventually scored the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
The game rode all the way into extra innings as a 3-3 stalemate, which went in the favor of Lindsey Wilson. Elizabeth Funk doubled in the eighth inning to bring home the lead run, which was followed up by Brianna Griffiths notching an RBI single to give LWC the eventual 5-3 win.
Hannah Epperson received the win from the circle, going 7.0 innings of work while allowing one earned run and matching her career-high of 11 strikeouts. Ramirez picked up the save.
The Lindsey Wilson softball team is set to open play at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on Wednesday against No. 5 Marian (Ind.) with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
