Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. - Working off the best start in program history, the Lindsey Wilson softball team maintained its spotless form, securing a two-game sweep of Georgetown (Ky.) on the first day of their Mid-South Conference series on Thursday afternoon at Sparks Park.
Game 1
Lindsey Wilson 4 | Georgetown 2
A go-ahead three-run home run by Alexus Garza in the bottom half of the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Blue Raiders won their second come-from-behind affair in as many days.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the top leg of the second thanks to a solo home run from Kaylyn Barnett off Lindsey Wilson ace, Annabelle Ramirez.
As the home side struggled to find any offense against Georgetown starter Megan Brankamp, the visitors bats continued to pressure Ramirez until eventually, they would garner a second solo home run in the top of the fifth. This instance coming off the bat of Peyton Beger.
The park-clearing hits are the first two off the hand of Ramirez this season.
In the following half-inning, the Lindsey Wilson offense finally found its rhythm.
After Mikayla Marquez reached first on a fielder's choice, Lexi Isable followed up with a five-pitch walk, setting two runners aboard for Makea-Al Kaluau who sent a 3-1 pitch into right to score Marquez from second, cutting the deficit in half.
The deficit would not last much longer, however, as Garza strutted up to the plate and smacked her third moon shot of the season over the left-field fence.
Despite surrendering two runs, Ramirez (10-0) remained composed in the circle for Lindsey Wilson, retiring six of the final eight Georgetown batters, including three on strikes to top her game-total off at 11 and ice the win for the Blue Raiders.
Game 2
Lindsey Wilson 8 | Georgetown 1
Brianna Griffiths came to play in the second edition of Thursday's action, launching two three-run home runs to help propel Lindsey Wilson to a commanding 8-1 game two victory.
The shortstop was also responsible for nine outs in the infield as both defenses shined at times in this outing.
It was the Blue Raiders' offense, nevertheless, that got the ball rolling, or in this case, flying.
Following back-to-back groundouts, Kaluau broke up the early gem with a single through the hole at short. Garza responded with a single of her own, setting up Griffiths for the first of her two marks. On a 1-1 count, the junior lined a fastball over the right-field fence, narrowly making contact with the Cumberland Parkway.
The two sides would track through back-to-back scoreless innings before a solo home run from Carly Oliver in the top of the fourth ended the shutout bid for starter Breanna Clark.
Taking a 3-1 lead into their half of the fifth, the Lindsey Wilson offense decided to invest in some much-needed insurance.
Marquez opens the inning with a fielder's choice single and was immediately sent back to the plate off the bat of Isable.
Then, after a five-pitch walk allowed Kaluau to reach first, Garza stepped up and safely reached thanks to another fielder's choice. Enter Griffiths.
Again, on a 1-1 count, the Blue Raiders' infielder sent a three-piece into deep center for her second of the contest and third on the season.
Not finished yet, Alexis Garayzer followed up Griffiths with a single up the middle, only to be brought home by Houston on the next at-bat.
Clark worked the complete game for Lindsey Wilson to lock up her fourth victory of the season. The senior retired two on strikes and also walked two.
On the day, Garza led the team with four hits, Griffiths tallied a day-high six RBI's, while Sam Sims reached base in each of her five plate appearances.
The Blue Raiders and Tigers will complete their series on Sunday afternoon at Sparks Park, beginning at 2 p.m. CT. All the action will be available on the Lindsey Wilson Sports Network.
