Softball escapes Cumberland with two extra-inning wins; Sweep season series

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team willed their way to two extra-inning wins over Cumberland (Tenn.) at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on Monday afternoon.

The Blue Raiders took game one 6-5 in eight innings before pulling off the second come from behind win of the day on a 4-3 nine-inning contest.

Carissa Summers reached on a walk to lead off the eighth inning before two sacrifices by Lyric Houston and Sam Sims pushed her to third. Mikayla Marquez then finished the game off with a single to shallow left, scoring the decisive run from third.

Trailing by three runs in the sixth inning, the Blue Raiders managed their biggest comeback of the season to keep their record unblemished. Lindsey Wilson tallied a run in the first inning, adding another in the fifth to lead the Phoenix 2-1 after CU scored in the fourth.

The Phoenix exploded for four runs in the top half of the sixth inning on four hits scattered around the field. The Blue Raiders responded, scoring three runs of their own in the inning.

Elizabeth Funk reached on a leadoff walk, followed by a Summers single to shallow left field. A two error play on a Houston grounder that first got past the CU second baseman and then the center fielder started the Blue Raider comeback bid, scoring both Funk and Summers.

A Sims single pushed Houston to third base before a Lexi Isable, double off the left-field wall scored the game-tying run.

Cumberland coughed up five errors in the game, helping the Blue Raiders pick up the victory.

Annabelle Ramirez (17-0) picked up the win while recording 13 strikeouts from the center circle.

The Blue Raiders led after the third inning when Isable scored on a Kaluau double. That lead held until the seventh inning when Cumberland sprang to life, pushing two runs home to take a 2-1 lead.

Lindsey Wilson kept the game alive – forcing extra innings for the second time -- in the bottom half of the seventh when Kaluau once again produced an RBI double to score Isable. She reached base earlier in the inning on a single.

Following a scoreless eighth inning, Cumberland's second batter Ashton Whiles managed the Phoenix's second solo home run of the contest. The first came during the seventh inning.

Sam Sims came into the contest as a pinch hitter and opened the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single. After back-to-back LWC strikeouts, Kaluau once again doubled to left field, scoring the game-tying run. Garza then sealed the deal for the Blue Raiders with a bloop single that just outpaced the reach of Cumberland's shortstop in left field.

The Blue Raiders produced 15 hits in the contest while the Phoenix managed just six.

Ramirez picked up her second win of the day to move to 18-0 on the season. She pitched the final three innings to record six strikeouts. Hannah Epperson got the start going six complete, allowing five hits with five strikeouts.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Union (Ky.) on the road at1 p.m. CT.
