"Walk"-off Guides Softball to Series Win over Freed-Hardeman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBIA, Ky. - On the second day of their Mid-South series, Lindsey Wilson and Freed-Hardeman treated fans to much of the same action that was presented on Sunday. Only this time around, the Blue Raiders emerged victorious twice to claim the series victory in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on Monday.

Game 1

Lindsey Wilson 7 | Freed-Hardeman 3

In the first edition of Monday's doubleheader, Annabelle Ramirez picked up right where she left off for the Blue Raiders, orchestrating consecutive perfect innings to start en route to a 13-strikeout performance.

The Lions opened the scoring with authority, sending a solo home run off the bat of Samantha Morgan in the top half of the third inning.

Lindsey Wilson, however, had an answer brewing up its sleeves. On a 2-0 count, lead-off batter Lexi Isable lifted her first dinger of the season over the left-field fence to knot the game at 1-1.

Three batters later, with a runner stationed at first, Lyric Houston rallied off her first home run in 22 days, giving the home side its first lead of the day.

The initial advantage did not last long, nevertheless, as Freed-Hardeman would utilize back-to-back RBI-singles in the top leg of the fifth to tie the game again, now at 3-3.

After two subsequent scoreless half-innings, the Lindsey Wilson offense returned to action.

With two down in the bottom of the sixth, Desiree Chang dropped a well-placed infield single to plate Isable, restoring the Blue Raiders' lead.

Then, on the following at-bat, Sam Sims connected on her fifth hit of the series, singling into shallow left-center to score Houston.

Alexis Garayzar would serve the cherry on top with a two-run RBI-double up the middle, allowing Chang and Sims to return home and give Lindsey Wilson a 7-3 cushion.

Despite garnering two base runners in the front half of the seventh, Ramirez buckled down to retire the next three Lions and secure the win.

Game 2 (Eight Innings)

Lindsey Wilson 4 | Freed-Hardeman 3

Earning the start in the circle for the Blue Raiders in game two was Emalee McCord, her first career start, and the freshman did not disappoint.

After a Blue Raider miscue allowed the Lions to score first in the opening inning, McCord locked down to retire nine of the next fourteen Freed-Hardeman batters behind a standout effort from the Lindsey Wilson infield.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, it did not take long for the game to return to even ground.

On a 1-1 pitch, Garayzar launched a no-doubter into left, tying the affair at 1-1.

As McCord worked through the Lions order, and Brittany Adair handled business in the circle for Freed-Hardeman, the two sides traded scoreless innings before arriving at the fourth.

Again leading off the inning, Isable continued to flaunt the hot bat with another solo shot, this time to straightaway center.

Then, in the sixth inning, after the visitors reclaimed the lead in the top half, the Blue Raiders produced yet another response, this time off the bat of Houston, whose sacrifice flyout was enough to score Isable from third base.

The Lions did not shy away from the task, however. With Ramirez inserted into the game in relief of McCord, Annalise Jarnagin skied the first pitch of the inning out of the park to force extra innings.

After Ramirez navigated through the Lions' order in only eight pitches in the top of the eighth, the attention turned swiftly to the Blue Raider bats.

Makea-Al Kaluau led off the frame with a sharp double to left, then Isable ripped a single through the hole at short to set runners at the corners.

Later in the inning, with two outs on the board, Freed-Hardeman opted to walk Houston, giving her four pitches outside the zone to load the bases for Mikayla Marquez.

The nifty outfielder worked the count up to 3-1 before Adair missed the inside of the zone to walk home the winning run in Kaluau.

While unconventional, it is the third walk-off of the season for Marquez.

On the day, Isable and Kaluau each totaled three hits, while Houston led the way with three RBIs.

The Blue Raiders close out the home portion of their schedule on Monday when they host non-conference opponent, Montreat (N.C.) at 2 p.m. CT.
