Softball sweeps Pikeville in MSC Opening Round

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team found their offensive prowess today as they swept Pikeville (Ky.) in the Mid-South Conference Opening Round at Marilyn D. Sparks Park. The Blue Raiders took game one 6-0 before punching their ticket into the MSC Tournament Double-Elimination Bracket with a 5-1 win in game two.

GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 6 – Pikeville 0

Pikeville spotted the Blue Raiders an early lead in the game after issuing two straight walks to open the contest. Mikayla Marquez then lined an RBI single to right-center field that scored Lexi Isable from second.

Lindsey Wilson pushed three more runs home in the third inning. Makea-Al Kaluau reached base for the second time via a walk. Marquez then put runners on the corners when she reached base on an error but quickly put two runners in scoring position with her 23rd stolen base of the season.

Alexis Garayzar produced a two-RBI single to push the LWC advantage to 3-0. Garayzar later scored on another Pikeville error.

Lindsey Wilson put the game away with two more runs in the sixth inning. Desire Chang and Isable both reached on walks to open the inning before an Alexus Garza two-RBI double pushed the Blue Raider lead to 6-0.

Ramirez (24-4) recorded the win in the circle, finishing the game not allowing a hit as she struck out 11 batters. Megan Claypool (5-15) suffered the loss for the Tigers after pitching five innings, allowing five hits and striking out six.

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 5 – Pikeville 1

Pikeville struck first in game two as they managed to score one run in the second inning. Lillie Kluesner tallied the Bears first hit of the day before scoring on a Haley Osborne RBI double.

Lindsey Wilson came to life in the fifth inning, rattling off three hits and four runs scored. Lindsey Wilson loaded the bases after a leadoff out. Kaluau and Garza each reached base on singles as Breanna Clark reached on a walk.

Garayzar produced a two-RBI single that scored both Kaluau and Marquez, who came on to pinch run for Clark. A Pikeville error scored the Blue Raiders final two runs in the inning to push their lead to three runs.

A Marquez single in the sixth inning scored an insurance run in Isable who reached base earlier in the inning off a single.

Hannah Epperson (7-1) pitched a complete game to earn the win. She allowed just three hits and struck out five.

Lindsey Wilson turns their attention to the six-team MSC Tournament Bracket on Thursday, May 6-9. Contests will be played on both Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University Campuses. Opponents and game times will be released this weekend as the bracket will be determined following all of this week's opening round contests.
